SEOUL, Dec. 9– South Korea saw a higher transient population in population-reduced areas in the second quarter, statistical office data showed Tuesday.
The number of de facto populations, which includes registered residents, registered foreigners and transient people in 89 depopulated areas across the country, totaled around 31.37 million in May, according to the Ministry of Data and Statistics.
The transient population of about 26.51 million was some 5.5 times larger than the registered population of 4.86 million in May. It was higher than 5.2 times tallied in May last year.
In April, the transient population was 4.2 times larger than the registered population, while the figure was 4.6 times in June.
The transient population refers to those who visit a specific area for purposes, which include commuting, schooling and tourism, to stay for at least three hours per day and for one or more days per month.
The result was based on data of local and foreign residents from the interior and justice ministries along with data from mobile operators and credit card companies.
The length of stay for the transient population averaged 3.2 days in the April-June quarter, lower than 4.4 days for the foreign transient population. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
