MANILA, Nov. 18– Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro on Tuesday welcomed Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin here, marking the first visit by a Palestinian foreign minister since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1989.
Lazaro said the historic visit reflects a “growing partnership” and a shared commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
During bilateral talks, the two officials agreed it was “high time” for the Philippines and Palestine to pursue more practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Earlier in the day, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, creating a structured mechanism for regular dialogue.
Lazaro added that the Philippines is ready to provide technical and capacity-building assistance to Palestine, particularly in technical and vocational education and training.
Shahin, meanwhile, updated Lazaro on developments in the Gaza peace process. Lazaro reaffirmed the Philippines’ “unwavering and unequivocal” support for a two-state solution, calling it the only viable path to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
Shahin is on an official visit to the Philippines from November 16 to 21. (Xinhua)
