ROSTOV-ON-DON, 26 JUNE — Croatia defeated Iceland 2-1 in their final Group D qualifying game on Tuesday night.
Milan Badelj opened the scoring for Croatia and although Gylfi Sigurdsson equalized from the penalty spot, Ivan Peresic’s late strike means Croatia go into the last 16 with a 100 percent record.
Croatia rested key players but started strongly, although Iceland ended the first half on top, only for Badelj to open the scoring from close range shortly after the break.
Gylfi Sigurdsson, who had missed a penalty against Nigeria, equalized from the penalty spot after handball from Dejan Lovren, but with Iceland desperately searching for a goal that would have put them into the last 16, Peresic’s left foot shot with the clock about to hit 90 minutes, decided the game. – XINHUA
