Agriculture Returns Millions to Treasury Amidst Farmer Struggles

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, July 11 – In a disheartening turn of events, the Ministry of Agriculture has once again returned millions of dollars to the treasury while farmers continue to face hardships due to inadequate support. Earlier this year, it was revealed that a staggering 98 percent of fresh produce is still being imported from neighbouring countries, primarily South Africa, highlighting the need for local agricultural development.

In its latest setback, the Ministry returned a substantial amount of N$98 million to the treasury. This money could have been utilized to address pressing issues such as farmer training, procurement of new vehicles to replace the ageing fleet, and renovation of dilapidated buildings, especially in the regions. Notably, a few years ago, the Northern Electricity Distributor (Nored) was forced to disconnect power to some of the Ministry’s buildings in Kavango East due to non-payment.

A staff member based in Katima Mulilo, who preferred to remain anonymous due to media restrictions, disclosed that the current fleet of vehicles is outdated, hindering their ability to effectively carry out their duties. “We are sharing vehicles, which means that in a month, I can only access a vehicle for two days. Our work requires us to be in the field 80 percent of the time and carry out administrative tasks for the remaining 20 percent. However, due to the shortage of vehicles, we are now confined to our offices and unable to carry out fieldwork,” they lamented.

This unfortunate incident adds to the growing list of government ministries and agencies returning funds to the treasury. In 2022 alone, a total of N$400 million was returned, with the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development being the main culprit. This ministry oversees local authorities that struggle to deliver basic services due to a lack of financial resources.

The repeated return of funds raises concerns about the government’s ability to effectively allocate and utilize resources for the benefit of its citizens. As farmers grapple with limited support and the agriculture sector continues to face challenges, the necessary investments must be made to bolster local production and reduce reliance on imported goods.

The agriculture department must urgently address the existing gaps and prioritize the needs of farmers by allocating funds for training programs, updating their vehicle fleet, and ensuring the proper maintenance of infrastructure. It is only through these concerted efforts that the agricultural sector can flourish, contributing to economic growth and food security for the nation.

As farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector eagerly await concrete action from the government, the plight of those who put food on our tables remains a pressing concern. The return of millions to the treasury underscores the need for a more robust and supportive agricultural framework that empowers farmers and propels the nation towards self-sufficiency. – Namibia Daily News

South Africa’s Johannesburg sees rare snowfall on Monday

JOHANNESBURG, July 10  — South Africa’s Johannesburg, the largest city in the country, experienced snowfall on Monday.

Johannesburg last saw snow in 2012 and 1996. On Sunday night, temperatures dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius in Johannesburg, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

“A cold front caused a significant drop in temperatures over Gauteng Province. The minimum temperatures recorded have met criteria for snowy conditions,” the SAWS said in a statement on Monday, which noted that snow was also experienced in Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces.

The SAWS advised the public and small stock farmers that the very cold, wet and windy conditions may pose a risk to livestock, vulnerable crops and plants.

The Gauteng Metrorail said the snow affected infrastructure and its components, which include tracks, cross-over points and electrical cables, forcing them to suspend some trains, adding that the overhead wires experienced tension which resulted in power instability and failure. (Xinhua)

Namibia Signs $10 Billion Deal for Green Hydrogen Production

NDN Staffer

WINDHOEK, July 10 — Namibia is poised to emerge as a significant contender in the global green hydrogen market, driven by its abundant renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power. The country’s favourable conditions make it an ideal location for hydrogen production. To further boost its position, the Namibian government is actively seeking foreign investment in the green hydrogen sector.

In a promising development, the Namibian government inked a $10 billion agreement with German company Hyphen in June 2022. The deal aims to produce two million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030. This venture is just one of several green hydrogen projects currently underway in Namibia.

The Namibian government envisions green hydrogen as a catalyst for substantial economic growth in the country. The production of green hydrogen would generate employment opportunities, enhance exports, and contribute to diversifying Namibia’s economy.

Nevertheless, Namibia must address certain challenges to establish itself as a prominent green hydrogen producer. The production costs of green hydrogen remain relatively high, and the development of infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and storage is essential.

However, bolstered by its abundant renewable energy resources and supportive governmental policies, Namibia’s administration maintains a positive outlook regarding the country’s potential to become a significant player in the global green hydrogen market. Namibia is well-positioned to lead the charge in the clean energy transition. – Namibia Daily News

Angola Reintroduces Giraffes After Decades of Civil War

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, July 10 — Fourteen giraffes have recently been reintroduced to Angola, marking a significant effort to bolster the country’s wildlife population. These giraffes, originally from neighbouring Namibia, were carefully transported to Iona National Park, one of Angola’s largest parks.

The grand release of the giraffes took place on February 25, 2023, during a ceremony attended by government officials and representatives from the African Parks organization, which is spearheading this commendable reintroduction project.

Angola’s President, José Eduardo dos Santos, expressed his enthusiasm for this achievement, stating, “This is a remarkable milestone for Angola. It showcases our unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation and our determination to rebuild our country after enduring decades of civil war.”

The giraffes were brought to Angola as part of a breeding program orchestrated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. With the reintroduction of these magnificent creatures, the foundation aims to revitalize Angola’s giraffe population, which had suffered greatly due to poaching during the civil war.

Stephanie Fennessy, co-founder of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, expressed confidence in the success of this initiative, stating, “We firmly believe that these giraffes will flourish in Iona National Park. This marks a crucial step in the long-term recovery of the Angolan giraffe population.”

The reintroduction of giraffes forms part of a broader wildlife conservation effort led by the Angolan government. In recent years, the government has made significant investments in protected areas and implemented effective anti-poaching initiatives. As a result, the elephant and lion populations in Angola have witnessed remarkable growth.

This reintroduction of giraffes serves as a testament to Angola’s dedication to the restoration of its natural heritage. It also underscores the importance of wildlife conservation in countries recovering from conflict.

The Angolan government anticipates that the reintroduction of giraffes will not only contribute to wildlife conservation but also bolster tourism in the country. Iona National Park is already a popular tourist destination, and the addition of giraffes is expected to attract an even larger number of visitors.

These giraffes will find their permanent home in Iona National Park, a secure and suitable habitat that provides them with all the resources necessary for their well-being.

The successful reintroduction of giraffes stands as a significant triumph for wildlife conservation in Angola. It showcases the country’s commitment to safeguarding its natural resources and signifies its ongoing journey of recovery. – Namibia Daily News

“This race series is yet another testament to Nedbank Namibia’s contributions to the growth of cycling in the country. Interview: NATO uses Ukraine as sacrificial pawn in defeating Russia, says German lawmaker

A German lawmaker has accused NATO of fighting a proxy war against Russia by supplying military aid to Ukraine.

BERLIN, July 10  — A German lawmaker has accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of fighting a proxy war against Russia by supplying military aid to Ukraine.

“If we picture this conflict as a game of chess, then NATO is looking for pawns that can be sacrificed if need be, to secure a better position,” Sevim Dagdelen, a member of Germany’s lower house of Parliament, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

By delivering weapons and deploying NATO military advisors in Ukraine, NATO is now waging a proxy war against Russia to defeat the nuclear power through a combination of military force and an all-out economic war, said Dagdelen, chairwoman of the Die Linke (Left Party) parliamentary group of the German Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

She said that NATO is not a defence alliance, even though that is the constant refrain of Western leaders.

At the same time, the military pact is engaged in an aggressive arms drive and is thwarting all negotiation efforts regarding the Ukraine crisis, she said.

The NATO summit, slated for July 11-12 in Vilnius, Lithuania, would bring Ukraine closer to the alliance, said Secretary-General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg ahead of the summit.

“The discussions in the run-up to the NATO summit are extremely worrying,” she said, adding that a debate is taking place within NATO about giving Ukraine NATO membership or NATO-style security guarantees, which would bring about a war between NATO and Russia.  (Xinhua)
