We can beat cancer together – Pack

Jacquiline Pack, Executive Officer of Marketing and Corporate Communication Services at Bank Windhoek, stated that the Cancer Apple Project is the cornerstone of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme and that cancer is treatable. She said this at the twenty-second Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project launch on Monday, September 19, 2022, in Windhoek. “It embodies our firm belief that no organization can survive unless it gives back to and invests in the communities in which it operates,” she said.

Since its first donation of N$ 250 000 in 2000, the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project has raised N$ 31.9 million in support of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN). “As a connector of positive change, this project is near and dear to our hearts, and it is one of Namibia’s largest and most well-known fundraising efforts,” Pack said. With the hashtag #GiveHope, the Project encourages donors to visit its e-Apple Platform, where they can buy physical or virtual apples and apple juice. The price of apples remains N$5, the cost of apple juice remains N$8, and the price of virtual apples begins at N$5. All project funds will be donated to the Association in November 2022.

Pack said the Bank had developed an extensive media campaign covering traditional and digital channels to ensure that the Project’s message of hope reaches as many people as possible. She emphasised that the aim is to raise cancer awareness and reinforce the call to action by CAN for people to get screened so they can get treatment should they need it.

Being a connector of positive change

Bank Windhoek’s efforts over the last twenty-two years have seen the Cancer Association of Namibia reach out to communities who would overwise not have access to screening and early detection for cancer. The Project’s success depends on Bank Windhoek’s staff, school networks, the eApple Platform, and partners. “One objective unites us: to raise funds to create awareness and help in the fight against cancer in our country. With cancer diagnoses on the rise worldwide, it becomes increasingly important for the kind of partnerships the Cancer Apple Project has, to thrive. Only by working together can we achieve so much and reach so many,” said Pack.

To further increase engagement and cancer awareness, the Bank will host a digital competition #GiveHope on its social media platforms. It will invite participants to share joyous moments, such as smiling individually or in a group. Participants stand a chance of winning exciting prizes, and more details will be available on eapple.bankwindhoek.com.na.

Pack concluded by thanking CAN, the Project’s partners, Bank Windhoek staff and customers for their efforts in the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project’s existence. “Our collaboration is about providing hope and imparting as much support and information as possible about a disease we can beat together,” she said.

The Cancer Association of Namibia uses funds from this Project for its annual outreach programmes and pro-bono cancer screening across all 14 regions countrywide. In 2021, the Bank produced a documentary highlighting CAN’s annual campaigns fighting cancer in Namibia. With its revamped logo signalling the Project’s progression toward a more digital future, the Project’s key activities include Branch/Department, School, the internal entrepreneurial challenge, ordering, and donations towards the Project via the eApple Platform.

The partners of the 2022 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project are:

  • Namibia Fresh Produce and Food Lovers Market source apples from South Africa.
  • NamPost Couriers and FP du Toit Transport distribute the apples across the country free of charge.
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers audits the school competition results at no cost.
  • Safari Hotels hosts functions and accommodates representatives from the winning schools outside Windhoek to attend the handover ceremony at no cost.
  • Solitaire Press supports the Project by printing project materials at a lower cost.
  • NBC Radio spreads awareness messages in all local languages at no cost.

Syrian pound loses against USD by 7 pct at official markets

DAMASCUS, Sept. 19 — Syria’s central bank on Monday altered the official exchange rate of the country’s currency against the U.S. dollar, reflecting a loss of roughly seven percent of the Syrian pound per U.S. dollar. According to the Monday exchange rate bulletin released by the Syrian central bank, the U.S. dollar is now exchanged at 3,015 Syrian pounds as opposed to the previous price of 2,814 pounds.
Many Syrians living abroad send money home through unofficial channels in order to avoid losing money if they use the official exchange rate, which is substantially lower than the black market price that could reach 4,400 Syrian pounds to the U.S. dollar now.
Analysts believe the central bank’s move aims at controlling the transactions from abroad and keeping the exchange process within banks, instead of the black market.
Many analysts believe the new change in the rate is expected to affect prices and the purchasing power of the Syrian people.
The new rate is also the second alteration the bank makes in 2022. In April, the central bank changed the official exchange rate from 2,512 to 2,800 Syrian pounds per U.S. dollar.
The Syrian government blames the economic crisis in the country on the U.S. sanctions, which have had a devastating impact on all aspects of life in the war-torn country.(Xinhua)

Namibia’s Namibian Investment Promotion Development Board (NIPDB) Joins African Energy Week 2022 as Diamond Sponsor

The Namibian Investment Promotion Development Board will be showcasing investment opportunities across the country’s oil, gas and green hydrogen industries as a diamond sponsor during the African Energy Week 2022 conference.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 19 — The African Energy Week (AEW) 2022 conference and exhibition – Africa’s premier event for the oil and gas sector which will be taking place from October 18-21 this year in Cape Town – will serve to drive long-term energy investment in Africa to usher in a new era of socioeconomic growth. In line with this objective, and as a facilitator of improved local and foreign direct investment in Namibia, the Namibian Investment Promotion Development Board (NIPDB) will be participating as a diamond sponsor at this year’s edition of the AEW conference.

Representing one of Africa’s fastest-growing energy markets, the NIPDB’s presence and participation as a diamond sponsor at Africa’s biggest event for the energy sector will be crucial for shaping the dialogue around current investment trends as well as the challenges and opportunities present across both Namibia’s and the continent’s energy sector.

The discovery of sizable oil and gas reserves by TotalEnergies at the Venus 1-X well; and Shell and Qatar Energy at the Graff-1 well in early 2022 – as part of a massive exploration campaign launched by the Namibian government to maximize the exploitation of local energy resources to meet local and regional energy needs – has opened up significant opportunities across the entire energy value chain in Namibia. In addition to realizing the potential of the country’s oil and gas prospects, the discoveries, along with the country’s favourable investment climate, have positioned Namibia as a lucrative investment destination in 2022 and beyond.

Moreover, with major players expanding upstream investments across Namibia’s untapped hydrocarbon-rich basins – in search of similar discoveries made at Venus and Graff-1 – massive investment opportunities remain across exploration and production landscapes. By shaping critical conversations in keynote addresses and networking forums, NIPDB will highlight these opportunities to regional, continental and international energy stakeholders and investors whilst promoting the role the country’s oil and gas will play in making energy poverty history across the continent by 2030. For Namibia, the discoveries promise a new era of economic growth on the back of oil and gas while for Africa, new supply streams at a time when the continent desperately requires new sources of energy.

While Namibia’s oil and gas industry undergoes impressive growth, the country’s green hydrogen sector has also emerged as one of the world’s most attractive and fastest-growing markets. Backed by abundant solar and wind potential, Namibia’s burgeoning green hydrogen industry has the potential to supply rapidly growing demand at a global scale whilst driving sustainable economic development and GDP growth at the regional level. Backed by an attractive regulatory environment and the country’s strategic location to become a green hydrogen exporter for international markets such as Europe, Namibia’s green hydrogen market – kickstarted with the development of a $9.4 billion project with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy in the Tsau/Khaeb National Park and recent plans to develop four hydrogen valleys in the Erongo, Karas, Otjozondjupa and Kunene regions – is headed for further expansion.

As such, the NIPDB is set to drive the green-hydrogen narrative at AEW 2022, leading high-profile discussions around the role a combination of private and public sector investments, and continental and regional investment partners will play in stimulating market development, growth and expansion. With the company set to host an Invest in Namibia side event at AEW 2022, key insight into current and emerging investment opportunities, the role Namibian energy plays in Africa’s energy future and strategies for securing foreign investment in 2022 and beyond will be deliberated.

“Namibia represents one of Africa’s biggest emerging energy markets, with sizeable investment and large-scale developments kicking off across the entire energy sector and value chain. On the oil and gas front, the country is witnessing newfound growth on the back of two historic discoveries made this year while on the green hydrogen front, Namibia-German investment partnerships lay the foundation for accelerated industry growth. Largely driven by the NIPDB, Namibia has established itself as one of the top energy investment destinations worldwide, and the NIPDB will share further insight at AEW 2022,” states NJ Ayuk, the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber (AEC).

Under the theme, ‘Exploring and Investing in Africa’s Energy Future while Driving an Enabling Environment,’ AEW 2022 will host NIPDB in high-level meetings and panel discussions where the organization will make a strong case for the massive investment required to fast-track Namibia’s hydrocarbon boom. Through these sessions and the Invest in Namibia side event, the country’s investment landscape will be presented to regional and international players.

Nagelsmann under fire ahead of unpleasant Octoberfest visit

BERLIN, Sept. 18 — Some duties turn into an unpleasant issue when it comes to Bayern Munich. Paying a visit to Munich’s famous Octoberfest this Sunday late afternoon might be one of them as Bayern is cruising in rough waters.
Four games without a victory in the national league have triggered growing unrest. Star striker Thomas Muller is openly talking about a crisis. “It’s like with the weather, it’s getting darker,” the 33-year-old stated.
“Three points out of four games, I doubt I will like the beer in one of the tents,” sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic commented.
Rumours talk about coach Julian Nagelsmann facing increasing pressure and more: reports speak of former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel as being available.
The examples of former coaches such as Niko Kovac and Carlo Ancelotti might show how quickly things can go as both faced early terminations when goals were missed, Kovac after ten games (18 points) and Ancelotti after six games in his second year (13).
Nagelsmann announcing a busy Sunday in advance of the beer excursion might give hints of how troubled the Bavarians’ mood is.
Ahead of several days-long international breaks, the 35-year-old has set up crisis meetings with several of his leading players.
Nagelsmann is facing growing accusations of exaggerating his rotation measures and losing the locker room. The coach lacks solutions on how to form an effective attacking line.
The downward trend of Sadio Mane might draw a picture of Bayern’s significant difficulties after losing goal-supplier Robert Lewandowski.
Spoiling up to 20 promising chances per game is causing concerns “as you don’t win a game acting like that,” Salihamidzic said after mentioning the coach is supervising one of the best squads in the club’s history.
Discomfort is written in Mane’s face after a series of goalless games followed by five goals in the first six games.
Delicate discussions return if Bayern can do without a box-striker fuelled by the Bayern coach announcing to think about action in the coming winter break. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer having the best chance in the dying minutes of the Augsburg game with a header is alarming.
While Salihamidzic seems convinced to have created a promising squad, Nagelsmann is said to have to deliver after the upcoming break against Leverkusen and Dortmund.
While two victories in the Champions League met expectations, Bayern is in danger of losing its Champions League spot in the league among the first four.
Twelve points after seven games stand for the worst season start in 12 years. After the first goalless league game when defeated by underdog Augsburg 1-0, Bayern has hit rock bottom.
Salihamidzic talks of “the end of all excuses” and calls victories essential to survive.
As it seems he is the best placed to talk about Nagelsmann who has to deliver before the kick-off of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in mid-November.    (Xinhua)

Women and Agriculture Summit aims to outline roadmap into agri-business

The National Theater of Namibia in Windhoek will play home to a half-day event on women and agriculture on September 22, 2022, organized by Heiress Communications and Energy100.

Tackling Global Food Insecurity and Women’s Role in Feeding the World is the theme of this event, which will promote a discussion between decision-makers and the women’s business community about agriculture and farming and their potential to have a net-positive impact on the economy. In addition, the event aims to provide a platform for women in business, particularly those interested in agri-business, to identify relevant organizations and their roles in the marketplace, as well as to serve as a roadmap into agri-business for any aspiring agripreneurs.

Heiress Communications hosted its first event in March 2022 under the theme, “Building Wealth in A Disruptive Economy”. During that event, discussions highlighted the challenges women faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and exposed the vulnerability women faced regarding the potential loss of income, both through business and employment.

Since then, the communications consultancy has worked to keep information accessible to women in business so they can better understand the business environment in which they operate and, as a result, better manage their businesses cohesively and capitalise on upcoming opportunities.

Ms. Paulina Mbango, founder and project manager at Heiress Communications, emphasized that the goal of this event is to educate and impact women, particularly small business owners. “We received so much positive feedback from the first event that we wanted to make a much bigger impact.” We wanted to host an event where everyone, whether they were familiar with agriculture or not, felt welcome. We are excited to welcome women (and men) from all walks of life, including corporate executives and women in other business sectors.”

Over 15 speakers from various organizations, including the Namibian Agronomic Board, Meat Board of Namibia, USAID, WFP, DBN, AgriBank, EIF, and Roots Agricultural College, will participate in the half-day summit.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Data Is the new gold-rush

It makes my heart sing to see how quickly technology and innovation are developing. I adore all things technological, and what we are currently witnessing will fundamentally alter both Namibia and the rest of the globe. Artificial intelligence is a prime example of a new technology that is upending established industries (AI).

I was recently encouraged to share the word on this issue after attending the Southern Africa Sub-Regional Forum in Windhoek. The Sub Regional and Namibian contexts were the key discussion points for AI at the Forum. We in Southern Africa and Namibia must be at the forefront and use AI to our advantage as a country and as a people; we cannot simply watch how the rest of the world adopts AI.

How about Artificial Intelligence, though? AI refers to a computer’s capacity for thought and learning. AI enables computers to carry out tasks that are typically performed by people, such as language processing, problem-solving and ultimately learning. Similar to humans, computers also learn to become better at the tasks they perform. By boosting the speed and accuracy of strategic decision-making processes, AI helps firms make better decisions, which enhances key business processes.

To simplify it, AI gives a computer certain data that we want it to learn. The computer learns that data so well that in the end, the output given by the computer helps us to make a more informed decision within a given context. This is all very well, but how does this benefit Namibia and Africa? Everything is based on data these days; all you are doing to feed the AI machines is inputting data. Data has therefore become more valuable than gold and you can honestly say the new gold rush is the ‘data rush.’ To benefit, locally and across the continent, we need to educate and develop our expertise in these fields.

We need to start developing the skills to implement AI in our different sectors. Within the health, agriculture, financial, and manufacturing sector. If we look at the health sector the technology can be leveraged to properly diagnose our people based on local factors that are Namibia-specific. Instead of purchasing an off-the-shelf system from abroad and trying to integrate it into our Namibian health systems. AI technology allows us to use our data to learn and give accurate data as feedback. In simple terms, software developed overseas will be based on their data, environment, culture, and user behaviours. Ignoring each country’s specifics and data.

Owning our data is essential, Facebook, Google, and many others have created billion-dollar companies based on owning and exploiting data. We must have and own our data. The mining of data is like the mining for gold, extremely lucrative and with data, there are terabytes of the stuff being added and created daily.

We cannot create another local Facebook or Google, but we can develop our apps and programs that generate data through its users. AI isn’t a trend, it is a tool that is being used to transform technology, and countries and change live. If we wonder if we can create our apps, we just need to look toward China. They do not use WhatsApp or Amazon. They created their versions in the form of WeChat and Ali Baba. AI can and will benefit us, we just need to know how to best harness the technology and implement it. I for one want to be right in the middle of this AI revolution.

Barcelona coach Xavi surprised by Lewandowski’s performance

WARSAW, Sept. 18 — FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernadez admitted that Robert Lewandowski surprised him in the first weeks of playing with the Catalan club.
Poland captain Lewandowski continues his perfect start at Camp Nou after joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich this summer. On Saturday the forward’s brace led the team to a 3-0 victory over Elche. Lewandowski sits at the top of the La Liga top scorer’s standings as he found the net eight times in six appearances.
“I’m really surprised at what a man he is. I mean his modesty, diligence and professionalism. He is always involved in the game. It’s really a luxury for a coach to have him in the locker room,” Xavi was quoted as saying by Spanish media on Sunday.
“We have a lot of young players who didn’t win a lot of trophies. They are very motivated to lift the cups. Simultaneously I can count on experienced players such as Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique or Lewandowski. I’m really happy because I see that the team really wants to win,” the FC Barcelona coach added.
Dutch striker Memphis Depay, who found the net against Elche just before the break, also praised Lewandowski on Sunday.
“He is a very intelligent player. On the pitch, he thinks really fast and he is very good at creating space for other players. Earlier I hadn’t got many chances to play with Lewandowski and Ousmane Dembele. I’m happy that on Saturday I could cooperate with them,” Depay said.  (Xinhua)

Indian PM releases cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno national park

NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday launched a cheetah reintroduction program in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, officials said.
Modi released the cheetahs that were brought from Namibia into enclosures at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno national park.
Television images show the prime minister releasing two cheetahs from enclosure number one and later the third from the second enclosure.
“Today these cheetahs have come as guests, unaware of this area. For these cheetahs to be able to make Kuno National Park their home, we will have to give these cheetahs a few months’ time,” Modi in his address said.
Following the release of cheetahs, Modi was seen photographing the felines with professional cameras.
Cheetahs are back in India seven decades after it was declared extinct in the country.
According to the officials, the eight big cats after being brought from Namibia in a special cargo plane Saturday landed at the Gwalior airport in Madhya Pradesh, following which they were flown in a helicopter to the Kuno National Park.
Experts have fitted radio collars in all the cheetahs and will be monitoring their moment and location through satellite round the clock.  (Xinhua)
