Niger Military Seizes Power, Detaining President

Niger, July 28 — The recent military coup in Niger, led by Major General Mohamed Bazoum, has sent shockwaves through the region, raising serious apprehensions about the future of democracy in West Africa.

This coup follows a pattern of military takeovers in the Sahel region over the past years, with Mali experiencing a similar military seizure of power in 2020, followed by Burkina Faso in 2022.

The coup leaders in all three countries have cited the need to address security challenges, particularly the rise of Islamist extremism, as justification for their actions. However, there are growing concerns that these coups could exacerbate the security situation, leading to an increase in human rights abuses and violence, as seen with the presence of Russian mercenaries in Mali.

The military in Niger has promised to restore democracy within 10 months, but doubts remain as they have detained the democratically elected president. This raises questions about the feasibility and sincerity of their commitment to a swift return to civilian rule.

The coup has also prompted scrutiny of Niger’s relations with its Western allies. France, the United States, and the European Union have all condemned the takeover and demanded the restoration of civilian leadership. However, the situation may open doors for Niger to reconsider its ties with Western allies and possibly look towards Russia, which has been expanding its influence in Africa and has been linked to support for the coup leaders in Mali and Burkina Faso.

Undoubtedly, the coup in Niger poses a significant setback for democracy in West Africa. The region now faces uncertainties regarding the military’s ability to restore stability or the potential for further destabilization. The aftermath of this coup will shape the future of Niger and could have far-reaching implications for the stability of the entire West African region.

Inter-Party Cooperation Key to Solving Conflict, Says Nandi-Ndaitwah at Russia-Africa Summit

By Lylie Happiness

Windhoek, July 28 – The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation and Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has said that the current state of geopolitical instability faced in the world cannot be left unattended and advised that the key to remedying this conflict is inter-party cooperation.

Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks at the second Russia Africa summit, where Vladimir Putin welcomed African leaders to the Economic and Humanitarian Forum. Nandi-Ndaitwah further emphasized that international organizations like the United Nations, regional security mechanisms, and bilateral alliances are established to play a crucial role in facilitating and strengthening cooperation, resolving disputes, and preventing conflicts.

Therefore, for these international bodies to be effective, Nandi-Ndaitwah said like-minded ruling political parties must coordinate their activities and their input in those bodies’ operations, to ensure adherence to international law and norms. In so doing, she said nations can build trust, mitigate security dilemmas, and foster an environment conducive to peace and stability.

Nandi-Ndaitwah explained that geopolitical instability is complex and multifaceted as it relates to international peace and security; hence it requires careful analysis and consideration. Among others, geopolitical instability influences the balance of power between nation-states, leading to uncertainty, tensions, and conflicts.

“In such a scenario, maintaining international security becomes a challenge. Geopolitical instability can be due to many factors, including territorial disputes, ideological differences, resource competition, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. However, the situation cannot be allowed to go unattended,” Nandi-Ndaitwah explained.

She added that one of the key aspects of addressing international security in the face of geopolitical instability is inter-party cooperation.

The minister said that this is so because parties are political institutions that are closer to the people and can appreciate their aspirations.”Inter-party cooperation can ensure an open and effective collaboration and coordination between different nation-states and international organizations to collectively address security challenges and promote stability. Inter-party cooperation can take various forms, such as bilateral diplomatic consultations, multilateral agreements, security alliances, and person-to-person contacts,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

Also speaking at the event, Putin shared that Africa’s potential is clear to everyone, sharing that, for instance, Africa’s average annual GDP growth of 4 to 4.5% per year is exceeding the global rate.

He further noted that the population is moving closer to 1.5 billion persons and is growing faster than anywhere else in the world. “Russia is sincerely interested in further deepening versatile trading investments and humanitarian ties with Africa,” Putin said.

The Russian president further added that last year, Russia-Africa’s turnover reached USD 18 billion and that Russian exports to Africa include machines, equipment, chemicals, and food. He shared that Russia understands the importance of seamless food supply to African countries and has paid special attention to the supply of wheat, grain, barley, and corn to African nations.

Putin said that last year, Russia exported 11.5 million tons of grain to Africa, and in the past six months of 2023, they exported 10 million tons, despite the illegitimate sanctions placed against Russia. He further questioned how Western countries get in the way of Russia’s fertilizer supplies but also at the same time blame Russia for the current global food security crisis. – Namibia Daily News

Green Hydrogen Project to Create 15,000 Jobs in Namibia

NDN Staffer

WINDHOEK, July 27 — Hyphen Hydrogen Energy and the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN) have unveiled a groundbreaking socio-economic development framework (SED Framework) for Namibia’s landmark $10 billion green hydrogen project.

The SED Framework, a pivotal aspect of the Feasibility and Implementation Agreement (FIA), underscores the GRN’s commitment to incorporating socio-economic development targets for renewable hydrogen developers in the country’s green H2 strategy implementation.

Beyond meeting legal requirements, the SED Framework reflects Hyphen’s dedication to maximizing Namibian participation in the project. It outlines objectives for local procurement, employment, skills development, and enterprise and supplier development.

During the official launch ceremony, both Hyphen and the GRN highlighted the SED Framework’s role in promoting Namibia’s socio-economic well-being. The project is poised to empower local communities, generate employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to a sustainable future for the country.

Toni Beukes, Hyphen’s Head of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG), expressed ambition in setting a global benchmark for sustainable and equitable development in large-scale green hydrogen projects, with a focus on inclusive economics and robust environmental sustainability.

The green hydrogen project is anticipated to generate up to 15,000 new jobs during the construction phase, with 3,000 permanent positions once operational. A key objective is to have 90% of these jobs filled by Namibians, with 20% earmarked for youth.

The project also aims for 30% local procurement of goods, services, and materials during both the construction and operational phases.

Governed by the pioneering FIA, the development, implementation, and operation of Namibia’s first green hydrogen project will make it the largest and “only fully vertically integrated” initiative of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

To foster community engagement and awareness, Hyphen and GRN have planned a 3-month national roadshow, starting in August, targeting local communities, businesses, and individuals across Namibia. The roadshow aims to provide detailed insights into the SED Framework and explain the project’s mechanics and potential benefits for the nation.

This development signifies a significant milestone for Namibia and the broader green hydrogen industry. The SED Framework sets a new standard for sustainable and equitable development in large-scale green hydrogen projects and is poised to attract further investment in the sector. – Namibia Daily News
