Rising Suicide Rates in Namibia: A Growing Concern

By Elezo Libanda

WINDHOEK, Aug. 21 – Namibia is grappling with a concerning rise in suicide rates, with the country possibly ranking among the highest in the world. In October 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched an awareness campaign to shed light on the alarming suicide rates in the African region. Six out of the top 10 countries with the highest suicide rates globally are in Africa, where approximately 11 people per 100,000 per year die by suicide.

The campaign, launched ahead of World Mental Health Day, aimed to reach 10 million people across the region to raise awareness and garner support from governments and policymakers for mental health programs, including suicide prevention initiatives. The efforts focus on equipping health workers to better support individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts, educating people on where to seek help, and sensitizing the public on identifying and assisting those in need to combat the stigma surrounding suicide, mental health, epilepsy, and substance abuse.

Suicide is a significant public health issue, and each suicide is a tragedy. However, in many African countries, including Namibia, suicide prevention is not given priority in national health programs. Experts argue that substantial investment is necessary to address the growing burden of chronic diseases and non-communicable conditions like mental disorders, which can contribute to suicide.

Namibia faces challenges in mental health service provision due to underinvestment by the government. The number of psychologists remains insufficient compared to the increasing population. Additionally, mental health workers are concentrated in urban areas, with limited presence in primary and community facilities.

Factors such as unemployment and substance abuse are identified as leading causes of suicides in Namibia. In 2022, WHO estimated Namibia’s suicide rate to be 9.7 per 100,000 population, making it the fourth highest compared to neighboring South Africa. Between January 2020 and June 2021, Namibia recorded 745 suicides, along with 1172 suicide attempts or ideation. Despite efforts by the Ministry of Health and Social Services to promote mental health and suicide prevention, challenges remain in providing psycho-social support at the community level.-Namibia Daily News

Import of Mahangu Grains and Beans from Angola through Oshikango Border Post

By Lylie Happiness

Oshakati, Aug. 21– The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR), serving as the National Plant Protection Organization, is raising awareness about the importation of Mahangu grains, primarily through entry points between Namibia and Angola.

Given the anticipated drought in Namibia that might affect crop yields, the Ministry expects an increase in sourcing and purchasing of Mahangu grains and beans from neighbouring countries like Angola. The Ministry has outlined rules and procedures for small-scale importers regarding the import, export, and transit of controlled agronomic products, such as grains.

According to Executive Director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, small-scale importers are allowed to import between 250kg to 500kg of agronomic products per person per month for commercial use and up to 200kg per person per month for personal use during the open border period.

It’s important to note that Mahangu grains and beans purchased from Angola within a 60 km radius, following the specified quantities, and mainly for personal consumption, are exempt from phytosanitary requirements on the Namibian side of the entry points. However, this exemption might not apply to the Angolan Competent Authority.

For those requiring import permits, MAWLR advises that permits can be obtained from their Directorate of Agriculture Production, Extension and Engineering Services offices in Omafo, Ongwediva, and Outapi. Additionally, imported Mahangu grains and beans must be new grain harvests, free from pests, diseases, debris, and soil, and subject to physical inspection at the point of entry. – Namibia Daily News

The Importance of Curiosity in Internal Audit

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, Aug. 21 — Curiosity is a natural human instinct that is present from birth. Children are constantly exploring their surroundings and asking questions. This curiosity is essential for learning and growth.

As we grow older, we often lose this curiosity. We become more comfortable with what we know and less willing to question things. This can be a problem for internal auditors, who need to be able to think critically and ask questions in order to be effective.

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about a problem. It involves gathering information, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions. Curiosity is a key component of critical thinking, as it drives us to seek out new information and to question our assumptions.

In the context of internal audit, curiosity is essential for identifying and assessing risks. Auditors need to be able to ask questions about the way things are done, and to challenge the status quo. They also need to be able to think outside the box and to come up with new ideas.

Here are some tips for developing curiosity in internal auditors:

  • Be open to new ideas and perspectives. Don’t be afraid to challenge the way things are done.
  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask “why” or “how.”
  • Be willing to admit when you don’t know something. This shows humility and a willingness to learn.
  • Be persistent. Don’t give up easily when you’re trying to understand something.

Curiosity is a valuable asset for internal auditors. By developing their curiosity, auditors can become more effective at identifying and assessing risks, and at providing valuable insights to their organizations.

Here are some additional thoughts on the importance of curiosity in internal audit:

  • Curiosity can help auditors to identify blind spots in their organizations. When we become too comfortable with what we know, we can start to overlook potential problems. Curiosity can help us to see things from a new perspective and to identify risks that we might otherwise miss.
  • Curiosity can help auditors to build relationships with stakeholders. When we show that we are genuinely interested in learning about their work, stakeholders are more likely to be open to our questions and to share information with us. This can be essential for conducting effective audits.
  • Curiosity can help auditors to stay up-to-date on changes in their organizations and in the industry. The world is constantly changing, and auditors need to be able to adapt to these changes. Curiosity can help us to stay ahead of the curve and to identify new risks and opportunities.

In conclusion, curiosity is a valuable asset for internal auditors. By developing their curiosity, auditors can become more effective at identifying and assessing risks, at providing valuable insights to their organizations, and at building relationships with stakeholders.

South Africa and Namibia Explore Energy Cooperation

By Staff Reporter

Windhoek, Aug. 21 – The Ministers of Energy from South Africa and Namibia convened in Windhoek on August 18 to explore prospects for collaborative efforts within the energy sector. Leading the discussions were Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the South African Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, and Tom Alweendo, the Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy.

During the meeting, a wide spectrum of subjects was addressed, encompassing the tapping of gas reserves in the Orange Basin, the augmentation of transmission infrastructure, and the potential for cultivating a green hydrogen economy.

Regarding gas exploration, the ministers concurred to jointly progress the development of the Kudu gas fields within the Orange Basin. The Kudu fields hold promise in generating up to 840MW of power, with South Africa having the potential to access up to 600MW.

Turning to forward-looking solutions, the ministers explored the concept of a green hydrogen economy. Green hydrogen, harnessed from renewable sources like solar and wind energy, presents a sustainable and eco-friendly energy source capable of curtailing greenhouse gas emissions.

With shared aspirations, the ministers committed to ongoing deliberations on these subjects and pledged collaboration to craft a mutually advantageous energy cooperation pact.

The meeting between the South African and Namibian energy ministers marks a noteworthy stride for both countries. It underscores their shared dedication to collaborative action addressing the pressing issues of energy security and climate change.
