UN releases 600,000 USD to aid Pakistan’s monsoon flood response

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 27 — The United Nations (UN) has allocated 600,000 U.S. dollars to support Pakistan’s response to the devastating 2025 monsoon season, according to a UN spokesperson.

Speaking at a press briefing in New York, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that according to local authorities, heavy rains and flash floods over the past 10 days have killed at least 400 people and left more than 190 injured across Pakistan.

More than 20,000 people remain displaced. Dujarric added that Pakistan’s meteorological department has warned of a new monsoon system in the forecast, with heavy rainfall expected to continue in the coming days.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), flood-affected communities urgently need shelter, medical assistance, cash-for-work support, hygiene kits, clean drinking water, education, and protection services, particularly for women and girls.

“The authorities are leading the response with the support of the United Nations and local partners,” the spokesperson noted. Since the start of the monsoon season on June 26, Pakistan has reported 802 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries linked to torrential rains and flooding, according to local authorities. (Xinhua)

Govt Silent as Over N$100 Million from NamPost Remains Unaccounted

By John K. Disho

WINDHOEK, August 28 – The Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises remains tight-lipped over the NamPost scandal involving more than N$100 million in unreturned pension and grant funds dating back to 2009.

NamPost has failed to submit reconciliation reports for unclaimed pension payouts, including funds meant for deceased beneficiaries, which should have been returned to Treasury annually.

Namibia Daily News is in possession of documents containing all these records, which confirm that unclaimed funds from 2009 to 2018 amounted to N$64.6 million, with the largest gap recorded in 2017–2018 at N$23.5 million, while the lowest was in 2011–2012 at N$6.3 million.

Records further reveal the following unreturned amounts: 2009 – N$6.4m, 2010 – N$5.5m, 2011 – N$2.2m, 2012 – N$4m, 2014 – N$4m, 2015 – N$7.7m, 2016 – N$10.9m, 2017 – N$12.4m, and 2018 – N$11m.

The controversy deepened in November 2019 when the Ministry mistakenly transferred payments to NamPost twice. The duplicate transfer has still not been refunded.

Observers note that NamPost continues to rely on manual, cash-over-the-counter disbursements rather than a computerized system, making proper reconciliation difficult.

The Ministry’s silence has drawn criticism, particularly after it announced that NamPost – without going through a tender process – will manage all government social grants from October 2025. Some parliamentarians have slammed the decision as reckless, given the unresolved financial discrepancies.

When Namibia Daily News first reported the scandal, the Ministry dismissed it as “fake.” However, questions sent to the Ministry’s Executive Director and NamPost’s Acting CEO last week remain unanswered.

China rejects call for joining nuclear disarmament negotiations with U.S., Russia

BEIJING, Aug. 27 — It’s neither reasonable nor realistic to ask China to join the nuclear disarmament negotiations with the United States and Russia, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.

Guo made the remarks at a regular news briefing in response to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump said recently that the United States and Russia are discussing cuts to their nuclear arsenals and expressed hope for China’s participation.

The country sitting on the world’s biggest nuclear arsenal should earnestly fulfill its special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament, further make drastic and substantive cuts to its nuclear arsenal, and create conditions for the ultimate realization of complete and thorough nuclear disarmament, Guo said.

“China’s nuclear strength is by no means on the same level with that of the United States. Our nuclear policy and strategic security environment are also completely different,” Guo said.

Noting China follows a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons and a nuclear strategy that focuses on self-defense, he said China always keeps its nuclear strength at the minimum level required by national security, and never engages in arms race with anyone. China’s nuclear strength and nuclear policy contribute to world peace, the spokesperson added. (Xinhua)

“One Namibia, One Nation Or a Crusade for Self-Destruction”:NNN

KATIMA MULILO, Aug. 26 – Namibia’s 35th Heroes Day was commemorated in the Zambezi Region on Tuesday with a fiery call from President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah: guard your hard-won freedom, or risk betraying it through corruption and division.

The event carried a heavy sense of history. For the first time, the Heroes Day stage was without the towering presence of Founding President Sam Nujoma. “His seat is now empty forever,” Nandi-Ndaitwah told thousands of attendees, her voice tinged with emotion. “May his legacy continue to guide us in carrying out our national responsibilities.”

She announced that symbolic graves will soon be erected at Heroes Acre for two fallen liberation giants — Brendan Simbwaye and Tobias Hainyeko  a gesture she said was long overdue.

But the President’s sharpest words were aimed not at the past, but at the present. “Corruption is treason,” she declared to loud applause. “It is a betrayal of trust, as it takes away resources meant for the people.” She warned that if Namibia fails to fight corruption and build unity, “we are on a crusade for self-destruction.”

The crowd, a mix of war veterans, schoolchildren, and traditional leaders, listened attentively as she challenged Namibians to live by the spirit of “One Namibia, One Nation.”

“Peace must be preserved at all cost,” she urged, noting that true heroism today lies in protecting the country’s unity and ensuring prosperity reaches every corner.

As cultural performers closed the ceremony, the message was clear: Namibia’s heroes fought with bullets, but the current generation must fight with integrity.

Lebanon signs World Bank loan agreement for infrastructure reconstruction

BEIRUT, Aug. 26  — Lebanese Finance Minister Yassine Jaber on Tuesday signed a 250 million U.S.-dollar loan agreement with the World Bank to support reconstruction of infrastructure damaged in recent Israeli attacks, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The deal will establish a fund to rebuild essential infrastructure, including roads, power and water systems, schools and hospitals.

Jaber called the agreement “an important first step toward reconstruction,” noting that Lebanon has also received 20 million dollars from Iraq and a pledge of 75 million euros (87 million dollars) from France.

The initial World Bank funding will finance urgent projects over the next 18 to 24 months to help displaced residents return home, reopen institutions and restore basic services.

The agreement will be sent to Lebanon’s parliament in the coming days for final approval. (Xinhua)

Trade between China, Arab League members hits record high in first 7 months

BEIJING, Aug. 26  — Trade between China and members of the Arab League reached 1.72 trillion yuan (about 241.61 billion U.S. dollars) during the first seven months of 2025, setting a record for this period and rising 3.2 percent year on year, official data showed on Tuesday.

According to the General Administration of Customs, bilateral trade has expanded steadily in recent years — with China remaining this bloc’s largest trading partner for several consecutive years.

In July alone, two-way trade reached 245.31 billion yuan, up 6.9 percent year on year. China exported 135.54 billion yuan worth of goods to the bloc last month, while imports totaled 109.77 billion yuan.

Complementary economies and a mutually beneficial trade structure continue to fuel cooperation between the two sides. From January to July, more than 40 percent of China’s crude oil imports were sourced from this bloc.

During the same period, China shipped 557.66 billion yuan of machinery and electronic products to the bloc, accounting for nearly 60 percent of its total exports to the bloc.

China is also deepening agricultural collaboration with the bloc, providing support in developing modern farming systems while expanding imports of signature agricultural products, such as Egyptian frozen strawberries, Lebanese chocolate and Algerian wool. (Xinhua)

EU defends digital sovereignty after Trump threatens tariffs

BRUSSELS, Aug. 26 — The European Union (EU) reaffirmed on Tuesday that regulating economic activities, including rules affecting major technology firms, is its sovereign right.

“It is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory, which are consistent with our democratic values,” European Commission chief spokesperson Paula Pinho told reporters.

The remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose “substantial additional tariffs” and export restrictions on countries that adopt digital taxes or regulations targeting U.S. tech giants.

“Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology…

This must end, and end NOW!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday. However, Pinho added that the issue was not part of the EU’s recent framework agreement with Washington, describing the two matters as “separate questions.”

The bloc’s tech spokesman Thomas Regnier also dismissed the criticism, stressing that the EU’s rules apply broadly and do not single out U.S. firms. (Xinhua)

Israel calls deadly Gaza hospital strike “tragic mishap” as Arab League, Egypt condemn

CAIRO/JERUSALEM, Aug. 25 — The Arab League and Egypt on Monday condemned an Israeli strike on Gaza’s Nasser hospital that killed at least 20 people, an incident Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “tragic mishap.”

Gaza health authorities said the strike on the hospital in Khan Younis, the last one operational in southern Gaza, killed five journalists and four medical staff.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called the attack “just one episode in a relentless series of massacres deliberately targeting civilians.”

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry labelled it a “new episode in a long series of blatant Israeli violations of international humanitarian law.” In a statement, Netanyahu said Israeli military authorities were conducting a thorough investigation.

Israel values the work of journalists, medical staff, and all civilians,” he said. An Israeli military spokesman, Effie Defrin, told reporters the army “does not intentionally target civilians” and blamed Hamas for creating “impossible conditions” in the territory.

According to Gaza’s health authorities, an initial strike hit the fourth floor of the complex, and a second strike targeted medical teams as they responded to the casualties.

Citing Israeli military officials, Israel‘s Kan TV reported the strike was carried out by a tank, not an aircraft. The report said the tank targeted a camera on the hospital that troops believed Hamas was using to monitor their movements.

The war, which began in October 2023, has devastated the coastal enclave. Israel does not permit foreign journalists into Gaza, but local reporters continue to provide coverage.

According to Gaza health officials, at least 273 journalists and a total of 62,744 people have been killed by Israeli fire since the conflict began. (Xinhua)

Iranian, European diplomats to resume nuclear talks in Geneva

TEHRAN, Aug. 26– Senior diplomats from Iran, France, Britain and Germany will meet in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss Tehran’s nuclear issue, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The talks will be held among deputy foreign ministers, Fars quoted Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, as saying on Monday.

Diplomats will also discuss Iran’s demand for the removal of sanctions and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, as well as the path ahead, according to the report.

The report came after Friday’s phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his counterparts from the three European countries of France, Britain and Germany, collectively known as the E3, as well as the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas.

Since last September, Iran and the E3 have held several rounds of talks on a range of issues, including Tehran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions.

The latest round took place in Istanbul, Türkiye, in late July. Over the past months, the Europeans have threatened to reinstate international sanctions on Iran by triggering the snapback mechanism, a clause in the 2015 deal that would allow the other parties to re-impose all international sanctions should Iran fail to comply with the agreement. Israel establishes military posts near Syria’s Damascus: monitor

DAMASCUS, Aug. 25– Israeli forces have established military positions in a strategic village southwest of Damascus, about 20 km from the Syrian capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday.

According to the Britain-based war monitor, the posts were set up on August 21 in Rakhlah, a village in the Mount Hermon area which overlooks three key roads linking Damascus with Lebanon’s Baalbek and Beirut.

The observatory said the move gives Israel a “significant strategic advantage,” placing its forces within artillery range of vital highways, including the Beirut-Masnaa and Beirut-Zahle routes, which are considered essential supply lines for Hezbollah.

It added that the deployment appears to be part of Israel’s wider strategy to encircle the Lebanese group and cut its potential supply routes.

There has been no official comment from Syria’s interim authorities on the reported deployment. Israel has carried out repeated airstrikes in southern Syria, targeting military sites and what it says are Hezbollah and Iranian-linked assets.

The reported fixed presence on the ground near Damascus would mark a major escalation in the tension between the two countries. (Xinhua)
