Russia requests urgent UN Security Council meeting on Nord Stream blasts

MOSCOW, Aug. 23– Russia has requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council on the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, following the arrest of a Ukrainian suspect in Italy, a senior Russian diplomat said Friday on social media.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, said that the meeting will take place on Aug. 26 at 4:00 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) under the presidency of Panama.

He said Moscow will draw attention to the “protracted and non-transparent” nature of Germany’s investigation into the blasts. German prosecutors said the Ukrainian national, identified as Serhii K., was detained Thursday in Italy at Germany’s request.

He is suspected of being part of a group that planted explosive devices on Nord Stream pipelines, and allegedly served as one of the coordinators of the operation.

Serhii K. has reportedly denied any involvement, saying he was in Ukraine at the time of the incident, and refused voluntary extradition to Germany, where he could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

On Sept. 26, 2022, unprecedented explosions caused severe damage to the Nord Stream pipelines, including three of the four lines of Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2, the latter of which had not been put into operation.

Russian officials have repeatedly asserted that the sabotage was carried out with U.S. support. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal case, classifying the incident as an act of international terrorism.

Heroes Day From Sacrifice to Financial Freedom

Heroes Day is a powerful reminder that our freedom was not given; it was earned. It was built on the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and unity of men and women who believed in a brighter future for Namibia. Their dream was not only for independence, but for dignity, opportunity, and hope for generations to come. We honour their legacy with deep gratitude and renewed inspiration.

Today, the baton of freedom is in our hands. The question we must ask ourselves is: how do we honour their legacy? For our generation, true independence must also mean financial freedom, the power to secure our families, educate our children, and live with bold confidence for tomorrow. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to build on the foundation laid by our heroes.

Heroes are not only those whose names are etched in history. Heroes are also mothers who save so their children can go further than they ever did. The young graduate who chooses to invest, believing in a future he cannot yet see. The family that protects their home and loved ones, ensuring tomorrow is more secure than today. These everyday choices are acts of courage. You are the new face of heroism. We thank you for every step you take to uplift your families and communities.

As our Founding Father, Sam Nujoma, once said on Heroes Day, “A people united…will always emerge victorious.” If we unite as Namibians to take ownership of our financial journeys, we will write a new chapter of freedom, one that empowers not only ourselves but the generations that follow. Together, our unity will transform gratitude into action and inspiration into a lasting legacy.

Heroes’ Day is not only a call to remember, but also a call to rise. Let us honour sacrifice with action, transform unity into progress, and turn dreams into realities through discipline, planning, and resilience. Today, we move forward together, thankful for the past, inspired for the future.

At Momentum Metropolitan, we believe that freedom is a journey. Together, We Can continue what our heroes began by enabling more Namibians to achieve financial freedom and enabling their journey to success.

As we commemorate this important day, Momentum Metropolitan thanks every Namibian for their courage, resilience, and unity. We wish the nation a wonderful and meaningful Heroes Day.

Namibia to launch new initiative to electrify rural communities

WINDHOEK, Aug. 22  — Namibia is set to launch a new off-grid electrification program aimed at bringing electricity to communities too far from the national power grid.

Announced on Friday, the initiative will complement the existing Solar Revolving Fund, a long-standing state-run credit facility that provides loans for solar systems to both rural and urban residents.

Speaking at the commissioning of joint electrification projects in Otjiwarongo, north-central Namibia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy Natangue Ithete highlighted the practical challenges of grid expansion.

“As we continue to work hard to bring electricity to every Namibian, we should also face our reality,” Ithete said. “There are some communities that are too far from the main grid; therefore, connecting them to the grid is a challenge.”

He noted that the solar systems are high-quality products intended to bring modern electricity to remote communities. “We must take ownership and pride in them,” he added.

The program focuses on decentralized, sustainable energy solutions to complement ongoing government efforts.

Ithete emphasized that development requires collaboration between the state, the private sector, and citizens, with the government providing resources and guidance while partners deliver services and infrastructure.

“By 2040, no single Namibian must live without electricity because electricity is a need, not a luxury,” said Ithete. The initiative comes as many African nations grapple with the challenges of rural electrification.

Namibia is part of the Mission 300 energy compact, an African effort to electrify 300 million households by 2030. For Namibia, this entails 200,000 new connections by 2030 and 400,000 by 2040. (Xinhua)

Windhoek Hikes Electricity Tariffs by 3.9% as Residents are Left Divided

John K WaDisho

Windhoek, Aug.26 — The City of Windhoek has announced, through a press release, that electricity tariffs will rise by 3.9% from 1 August 2025, a move approved by the Electricity Control Board under the Electricity Act of 2007.

The increase, part of the 2025/26 financial year plan, is aimed at keeping the city’s power supply secure, reliable, and able to meet growing demand.

City officials say the adjustment is unavoidable. They argue that without it, the city risks falling behind on maintaining and upgrading electricity infrastructure, which could compromise services in the long run.

“We want to ensure affordable electricity,” the City stated, “but we also need to invest in keeping the lights on for everyone.”

Not everyone is convinced. For many households already stretched thin, even a small percentage increase feels like another blow to their pockets.

Small business owners, too, fear higher bills will eat into already tight margins. Others, however, say they’re willing to pay a little more if it truly means fewer blackouts and a stronger, more reliable grid.

The announcement also carried a correction. The City urged residents to ignore an earlier notice published in newspapers, admitting it contained errors.

The updated press release reflects the accurate 3.9% tariff adjustment, with officials apologizing for any confusion caused.

With the new tariffs kicking in next week, Windhoek residents are bracing themselves. The big question now is whether this price hike will deliver on its promise of better, more reliable electricity—or whether it will simply be remembered as another added burden in tough economic times – Namibia Daily News

UN confirms famine in Gaza, warns of catastrophic spread

ROME, Aug. 22  — More than half a million people in Gaza are facing famine conditions marked by starvation and preventable deaths, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released on Friday.

The assessment, conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), said famine in Gaza City is now spreading southward to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

By the end of September, over 640,000 people are projected to face catastrophic food insecurity, with an additional 1.14 million at emergency levels and nearly 400,000 in crisis conditions.

The report confirmed that thresholds for extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition and hunger-related deaths have been breached, marking the first officially declared famine in the Middle East since the IPC was established.

UN agencies warned that intensified military operations and ongoing restrictions on humanitarian access could further exacerbate the crisis, leaving children, the elderly and people with disabilities at extreme risk.

They stressed that an immediate ceasefire and a large-scale humanitarian response are essential to saving lives.

The analysis showed that acute child malnutrition has reached record levels, with more than 12,000 children identified in July alone – a sixfold increase since January.

By mid-2026, some 43,400 children and 55,000 pregnant or breastfeeding women are expected to face life-threatening malnutrition.

Nearly all cropland in Gaza has been destroyed or rendered inaccessible, while aid deliveries remain sporadic and insufficient.

The enclave’s health system has collapsed amid severe shortages of food, fuel, water and medical supplies, coupled with a surge in infectious diseases.

The UN agencies called for urgent measures, including sustained humanitarian access, restoration of commercial flows, rehabilitation of health services and support for local food production to prevent further catastrophe. (Xinhua)

Israel warns of Gaza City’s destruction if Hamas doesn’t disarm, release hostages

JERUSALEM, Aug. 22  — Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Friday warned that Gaza’s largest city would be destroyed if Hamas does not yield to Israel’s terms.

He said in a statement that “the gates of hell” would soon open on Hamas unless it accepted Israel’s conditions to end the war, chiefly the release of all hostages and disarmament.

“If they do not agree, Gaza, the capital of Hamas, will become Rafah and Beit Hanoun,” referring to the two cities that the Israeli army has inflicted heavy destruction in the current war.

He added that this would be done “with heavy fire, evacuation of residents, and ground operation.” The remarks came one day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to move forward with military plans to capture Gaza City.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said he had also directed officials to begin “immediate negotiations” aimed at securing the release of hostages in Gaza and bringing the war to an end.

Israeli officials said that evacuation notices would be issued to Palestinians in the densely populated Gaza City before the army moves in, according to Palestinian security sources.

Meanwhile, Israeli army spokesperson for Arabic media Avichay Adraee said in a statement Thursday that the army has begun making initial warning calls to medical and international organizations operating in northern Gaza, notifying them that Gaza City residents should prepare to move south.

According to the Gaza-based health authorities on Thursday, the death toll from Israeli strikes and shootings since Oct. 7, 2023 has risen to 62,192, with 157,114 others wounded. (Xinhua)

Russia says deploying foreign troops in Ukraine “unacceptable”

MOSCOW, Aug. 22– Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Thursday that deploying foreign troops in Ukraine is unacceptable to Russia, as Ukraine’s Western allies work to provide security guarantees for Kiev.

At a press conference following talks with visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Lavrov noted that the core of Western-Ukrainian discussions is “providing (security) guarantees through armed intervention in parts of Ukrainian territory.”

Russia, he said, hopes that those proposing such ideas are merely seeking attention and can understand these ideas will be “entirely unacceptable to Russia and all rational political forces in Europe.”

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House on Monday, with a focus on security guarantees for Ukraine and a potential trilateral meeting among presidents of Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

Zelensky said after the meetings that security guarantees for Ukraine could be finalized within the next 10 days. Lavrov said Zelensky has yet to repeal a three-year-old ban on direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Ukrainian side’s calls for a summit are merely meant to feign constructiveness in resolving the crisis, replacing the serious, painstaking work needed to agree on principles for a sustainable settlement,” Lavrov said. (Xinhua)

England winger Eze on verge of Arsenal move

LONDON, Aug. 22– Crystal Palace’s England international winger Eberechi Eze is on the verge of a move to Arsenal, after coach Oliver Glasner left him out of the squad for Palace’s UEFA Conference League win over Fredrikstad on Thursday night and admitted the player had played his last game for the club.

“Ebs [Eberechi] will not play for us anymore, so it does not make sense to talk about him,” he said in a post-game interview on Channel 5. “It’s gone.

It looks like wishing him all the best for the new club and for us it is about bringing more players,” added Glasner.

The British sporting press reported on Thursday morning that Arsenal had reached an agreement to sign Eze from Palace for around 60 million pounds (80.5 million U.S. dollars), with a further eight million pounds in incentives.

Tottenham Hotspur had looked to be in prime position to sign Eze, but Arsenal stepped in to try and close the deal amid worries that forward Kai Havertz has suffered a long-term knee injury.

27-year-old Eze began his career at Arsenal, but was released by the club at 13, moving to Fulham, Reading and then Millwall, before starting his senior career at Queens Park Rangers.

He scored 14 goals for Palace last season, including the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. (Xinhua)

18 killed in 2 separate Colombia attacks

BOGOTA, Aug. 22– At least 18 people were killed and dozens injured in two separate attacks in Colombia on Thursday, said the local authorities.

At least six were killed and over 30 others injured in a bomb attack near the Marco Fidel Suarez Air Base in the city of Cali, said the mayor’s office.

The bomb attack occurred around 2:50 p.m. local time (1950 GMT), said the Colombian Aerospace Force, reiterating its commitment to the safety of Colombians.

Meanwhile, more than 12 police officers were killed in the northern town of Amalfi when the anti-narcotics helicopter they were on was shot down by the criminal group Estado Mayor Central.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed this, saying the helicopter was carrying personnel for “the eradication of coca leaf crops,” following their seizure of a cocaine shipment. (Xinhua)
