NUNW employees march against unfair labour practices

WINDHOEK, 25 OCT – Employees of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) engaged in a peaceful march in Windhoek on Thursday, accusing their employer of unfair labour practices.
The employees’ spokesperson, Erich Eiseb said their medical aid benefits have been terminated while salaries are always paid late.
They handed a petition over to NUNW secretary general Job Muniaro and took a copy to Labour Commissioner, Henri Kassen.
Eiseb said their medical aid was terminated on 08 October 2018 by the service provider, Prosperity Health Namibia.
“In addition, our pension is in arrears for three months and the scheme is threatening to terminate the service, while there also is 16 months’ outstanding deduction for Inland Revenue (taxes),” he said.
He further stated that the Social Security payments for staff are also in arrears of three months, adding that there is no salary increment either while the prices of commodities are rapidly increasing.
“Trade unions are supposed to uphold and respect the rights of workers as they form part of the custodians of labour rights and labour acts,” Eiseb said.
The group representative said NUNW should attend to their plight without delay and also respect its constitution so as to safeguard the rights of workers.
Kassen promised that a response to the petition would be provided to them soon.
