WINDHOEK, 24 OCT – The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) has called on Minister of Land Reform, Utoni Nujoma to resign from his position as they say he is incompetent.
The party issued a statement saying Nujoma should step down as he cannot handle land matters.
Contacted for comment on Tuesday, Nudo deputy Secretary-General, Vetaruhe Kandorozu said he must “do the honourable thing”.
“Ask the president to release you from your duty just like what happened recently in South Africa, when former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to release him of his duty,” Kandorozu said.
The party further called on President Hage Geingob to release Nujoma if he fails to resign.
“We have been following the whole issue with keen interest and we have come to the only conclusion, which is to request the minister to resign with immediate effect,” Kandorozu said.
Nudo’s request follows Government’s decision to lease four farms in the Khomas Region to Russian billionaire, Rashid Sardarov.
Sardarov reportedly bought the farms measuring 17 000 hectares for around N.dollars 43 million, donated them to the State and is now renting the same farms from the Government for 99 years.
The transaction was concluded just before the second National Land Conference held at the beginning of this month.
Kandorozu alleged that the transaction overlooked some important procedures such as Treasury instructions and the Procurement Act, which means it should be disregarded.
He said the Procurement Act requires that farms would have to be advertised in Government Gazette as well as in local newspapers, which he said was not done.
“It is evident that no Namibian was given a chance which is a sign of government undermining the potential of its own people.”
Kandorozu said Nujoma’s handling of land matters is scaring investors away.
“We are convinced as a party that his removal will attract investors.”
