ABUJA, Jan. 21 — At least two terrorists were killed while 62 hostages were freed recently in separate operations by troops in Nigeria’s northwestern states of Kebbi and Zamfara, the army said on Wednesday.
Olaniyi Osoba, a spokesman from the Nigerian army, said in a statement that the two terrorists were killed in Kebbi, following actionable intelligence on the movement of Lakurawa militants near the border with the neighboring Sokoto State.
The troops laid an ambush at Kebbi’s Kerani village, where they engaged the terrorists, who were wearing camouflage uniforms and riding on motorcycles, Osoba said, without revealing the exact date of the anti-terror raids.
In a separate operation in Zamfara, the troops searched the Munhaye Forest, which “led to the successful rescue of 62 kidnapped victims who are now in safe custody,” according to the army spokesman.
Osoba said arrangements have been made to reunite the freed hostages with their families, adding that the armed forces remain committed to dismantling criminal networks, restoring security, and protecting lives in the troubled northern region. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
