WINDHOEK, Jan. 27 -- The Namibian cabinet will take a proactive approach to ensure equitable distribution of arable land with special attention given to the previously colonized black majority population, Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Calle Schlettwein said Tuesday.
The current land distribution mode based on the "willing seller-willing buyer" principle has largely been unsuccessful in the past 30 years of dealing with land problems, Schlettwein said in a wide-ranging interview.
"It is evident that we need to look at opportunities of enforcing a "one farmer one farm" policy, distribute land to the formerly disadvantaged groups as well as find a solution that also synchronizes all these with what the law dictates," he said.
The minister also reiterated the necessity to avoid compromising food self-sufficiency while dealing with the land issue, saying he does not want to envisage such a situation in which land "ends up in unproductive hands."
"Land should be utilized as a productive asset. It must also be used to make sure that the country is self-sufficient in terms of food production," he added. Xinhua
