LILONGWE, Nov. 3 — The post-election violence in Tanzania has disrupted fuel supplies to Malawi, with 120 fuel tankers blocked from crossing the border between the two countries, according to a statement released by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.
The statement dated Oct. 31 said Malawi’s main fuel supply route through Tanzania, via the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga, has been blocked since Oct. 29.
It noted that the berthing of vessels has been suspended, affecting the clearance of 48 million liters of diesel and petrol from Tanga destined for Malawi.
According to the statement, the government of Tanzania has assured the government of Malawi that the fuel will soon be cleared from the ports of Tanga and Dar es Salaam.
Meanwhile, the Malawian government has secured additional fuel volumes through alternative routes, including the ports of Nacala and Beira in Mozambique and Msasa in Zimbabwe, to minimize the delays in fuel supply into the country. (Xinhua)
