BERLIN, July 24 — Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has been appointed head coach of the German men’s national team on a contract running until 2030, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Friday.
The 59-year-old succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany was eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Klopp, who was unveiled at a press conference on Friday, said the national team had a unique ability to unite the country and described the position as a special responsibility.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said Klopp had been the association’s first choice to take over the team. Klopp previously coached Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, winning the Bundesliga twice with Dortmund and the UEFA Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool.
He most recently served as global head of soccer at Red Bull. Klopp will lead Germany in the UEFA Nations League, the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign and the qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup.
His first match in charge will be against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
