NAIROBI, JAN 15 — Kenyan police are rescuing people who were trapped inside a hotel and surrounding buildings after an explosion followed by heavy gunfire was reported along Riverside area in Nairobi.
Witnesses said an unknown number of gunmen hurled grenades outside the dusitD2 Hotel compound, which is frequented by foreigners, before storming inside.
The same compound houses several private and government offices. “Right now we don’t know what is happening. We are lying on the floor in our offices and can’t look out,” said one of the workers.
Those trapped inside the buildings report of constant shootings.
Plumes of white smoke could be seen billowing from the scene into the air amid sustained gunfire.
Security officers have been deploying to the scene to contain the situation. The police have not established the exact cause of the attack. – XINHUA
