KEETMANSHOOP, 20 SEP – Learners from schools in Keetmanshoop this week received lessons in Otjiherero, Oshiwambo and Khoekhoegowab as part of National Heritage Week.
The lessons were organised by the Keetmanshoop Museum for learners from PK de Villiers Secondary School, Mina Sachs Primary School and JA Nel Secondary School.
Retired teachers conducted the lessons from Tuesday to Thursday.
Curator at the Keetmanshoop Museum, IssaBrown Garises told Nampa on Wednesday the aim was to foster appreciation and respect for other languages and understanding that cultures are diverse.
Garises said they also want learners to appreciate other cultures starting with the languages, because an understanding of languages helps with understanding cultures.
“Maybe they will also start practicing that cultures,” she added.
One of the retired teachers, Indileni Emmanuel, who is also a literacy promoter, said it is important for people to at least know the basics of other languages.
“It is very important because language is communication,” she said.
National Heritage Week started Monday and ends Sunday under the theme ‘Tu ruganeni kumwe’, which means ‘Let’s work together’ in the Rukwangali language. – NAMPA
