Jaco and Michel a formidable rally team.
Windhoek Nov 14 -Talking about rallies, be it on local or international soil, two Namibians stand out among many giants. When Jaco van Dyk and Michel Rust names appear on the entry lists, any competitor, spectator or motor enthusiast can be guaranteed world class action as merciless Jaco and navi Michel don’t understand the word “mercy” once they strapped into their rally monsters.9 To them they want to take all honors regardless what the stages, driving conditions or fellow competitors throw at them. Jaco’s rally career started 2004 and many of his supporters, competitors and friends will remember him behind the mighty Land Cruiser “ Ietsie Kleins” ( something small) that was not that small at all. I recall myself during the first encounter with jaco and Michel in their red Cruiser, south of Windhoek during the 2006 Total Tara when that Cruiser was not only a crowd puller, but the impressive machine left everyone in awe as it came down some stages as if Jaco and Michel were driving down Independence Avenue on a Sunday afternoon. Jaco’s rally career started back in 2004 and ever since made huge strides in the sport. He started 2004 with “Ietsie Kleins” ( still intrigued with that name for such a huge monster. 2008 it was an A7 Polo ( Ousus) the legacy continued with the names and 2009 Bokkie made her appearance ( A7 Golf) and 2009 and 2011 it was Chucky ( S2000 POLO). It was only after a few years break – 7 years to be exact due to a serious back operation, Jaco returned in 2018 to be part of the historic 50th Tara celebrations. This time he and Michel meant business and entered with a T1 Dakar Nissan Navara which ended a podium finish. This year they enter the Tara for the 2021 Dakar preparation Van Dyk said. Michel Rust also boast with a long track record in the motorsport industry that stretched back before independence as Rust accompanied his father, well known and legendary in the Motorsport fraternity Oom Rust. Michel is not only comfortable as a navigator , a passion he shares with Jaco, but is evenly comfortable behind his own race car’s controls as he is the title holder of several codes on the tracks. Rust during 1991 tasted the joy of a Tara as he entered in the driver’s seat, a seat that later brought him and Jaco together where he took over the navigator seat also known as the “hot” seat for Jaco. On the preparations for the 2012 Dakar Rust told Free Motor Media “2021 Dakar must happen” But for now it’s conquering the 2019 Total Tara.
