ULAN BATOR, June 22 — A human case of anthrax has been confirmed in Uvs province in western Mongolia, according to the country’s National Center for Zoonotic Diseases (NCZD) on Monday.
Preliminary epidemiological investigations indicate that the patient, a resident of Tes soum (administrative subdivision) of the province, was likely infected after coming into contact with a dead sheep last week.
A joint response team comprising specialists from relevant organizations is currently conducting field investigations in the affected area, the NCZD said in a statement. Response measures include epidemiological surveillance, containment of disease transmission, and the implementation of emergency outbreak control activities.
Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a spore-forming bacterium that occurs naturally in soil and primarily affects livestock and wild animals.
Humans can become infected through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid contact with sick or dead animals, and comply with disease prevention and control measures. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
