WINDHOEK, Mar. 11 – Green Hydrogen has been identified by President Hage Geingob as a “frontier of economic growth and an integral part of the post-Covid 19 ecoomic recovery” which should be embraced by Namibians as an investment in the future of the country, the Namibian Presidency announced on its Facebook page Thursday.
“In recent months, Namibia has been the focus of increased attention from Heads of State and Government, including business leaders in the global investment community. The renewed interest, which is a consequence of the post-Covid-19 recovery plan, which President Hage G. Geingob has been championing at home and abroad comes at a crucial time when Namibia has potentially discovered oil and has positioned itself at the center of the global energy transition through Green Hydrogen,” the presidency said.
Geingob has since March 7 been engaging leaders of the majority of political parties in the National Assembly that include SWANU, NUDO, Rally for Democracy and Progress, and All People’s Party, where he identified Green Hydrogen as key in the country’s future.
“Specifically, with Green Hydrogen identified by Government as an important engine of growth in light of the enormous transformational potential for the Namibian economy and the number of jobs to be created, President Hage G. Geingob has initiated a national dialogue with leaders of political parties, which will be followed by feedback sessions with communities in the Southern part of Namibia.”
In recent months, Geingob undertook various intensive high-level meetings with various heads of state which yielded positive results.
Said the presidency: “In February 2022, President Geingob completed an intensive sequence of high-level meetings with Heads of State and Government in the European Union during which Namibia featured prominently as one of the champion countries that can contribute meaningfully to decarbonization through Green Hydrogen.”
“Leaders of the political parties did not only express their appreciation for the invitation by the President to be briefed about Green Hydrogen as a national priority project, but they also pledged their total support to the post-Covid-19 economic recovery plan, with a specific focus on Green Hydrogen,” read a statement from the presidency.
The leaders of the political parties were taken through detailed presentations by the Director General of the National Planning Commission and Chairperson of the Green Hydrogen Council, Obed Kandjoze and the Economic Advisor to the President and Green Hydrogen Commissioner, James Mnyupe, about the processes that Government had elaborated to fast track the benefits of the nascent industry for ordinary Namibians. A detailed road-map was further presented.
Geingob has since assured leaders of the political parties that information sessions would continue, with a delegation of the Green Hydrogen Council travelling to //Kharas region to share details with the residents of the region. – musa@namibiadailynews.info
