ACCRA, July 25 — Solemn ceremonies were held Sunday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of former Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills, who died in office in 2012.
Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama took turns laying wreaths at the tomb of the late president.
“It was a truly tragic incident, never witnessed, and hopefully, never to reoccur in our history, certainly not in our lifetime — the death of a sitting president in office,” Akufo-Addo said in a speech.
Mahama, who served as vice president to Atta Mills, said the demise of the former president had left collective grief and pain in the memories of all Ghanaians.
“Those of us who had the privilege to encounter him at close quarters regularly, and worked with him, will never forget the impression that this great man-made on all of us,” said Mahama.
Present at the ceremonies were members of the late president’s family, the diplomatic corps, and people from all walks of life.
