KIEV, May 8 -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to lead the executive committee of Ukraine's National Reform Council, a presidential advisory body, the president's official website said Thursday. While signing the appointment decree, Zelensky expressed confidence that Saakashvili would be able to give impetus into the council and help make important changes in Ukraine. Saakashvili said that the appointment shows Zelensky's willingness to take extraordinary steps and introduce radical reforms. Saakashvili, 52, served two terms as Georgia's president from 2004 to 2013. In May 2015, Saakashvili received Ukrainian citizenship and was appointed the governor of the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa. In 2017, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko revoked Saakashvili's citizenship, due to allegations that he had submitted false information when applying for a Ukrainian passport. In May 2019, after coming to power, Zelensky restored Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship. The National Reform Council was established in August 2014 as a special presidential advisory body on strategic planning and coordination on national policies of reform and their implementation.
