KEETMANSHOOP, 23 SEP – Keetmanshoop Spar was destroyed whilst firefighters struggled for hours to contain and extinguish a massive fire inside the shop, which started around 10h00 on Sunday morning.
The fire in Mittel Street in the central business district of the southern town, could only be put out by local firefighters and reinforcements around 17h00.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but suspicions are that a gas bottle exploded in a storeroom at the shop, leading to the devastating fire.
Everything inside the supermarket was gutted by the blaze, including the stock on the shelves, documents and money in the tills.
No one was injured.
The local Spar management told Nampa they could only give details on Monday after an assessment into the cause of the fire.
Firefighters from Aroab, Tses, Koës and Bethanie had to assist as the building was burning from two sides and the local truck could not succeed in extinguishing the fire. Water trucks from NamWater, Aroab and Koës were also used to help refill the fire truck.
The incident attracted hundreds of bystanders.
Members and officials of the Namibian Police Force, Special Reserve Force, Namibian Defence Force, Keetmanshoop Municipality, Government ministries, Spar employees and management and community members also joined to help contain the fire.
