ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 6 — Ethiopia’s Afar regional government has accused Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces of crossing its territory and launching attacks on civilians.
The regional administration said in a statement that on Wednesday, the TPLF army entered the Afar region, took control of six villages, and bombed civilians with heavy artillery.
The statement noted that by shelling the Afar pastoralist communities, the TPLF has violated the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, a cessation of hostilities deal that ended a two-year conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the TPLF.
The regional government stressed that “it has a duty to defend its boundary from any external attack” and “protect the security of citizens.”
The latest conflict came after accusations between the federal government and the TPLF of failing to respect the cessation of hostilities agreement they signed on Nov. 2, 2022, to end the two-year brutal conflict. (Xinhua)
