ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 7– Ethiopia earned a record more than 5.7 billion U.S. dollars from the export of key mineral resources during the recently concluded fiscal year, the country’s Ministry of Mines has announced.
The ministry said in a statement issued Thursday that gold export accounted for the largest share of the total export revenue during the 2025/2026 Ethiopian fiscal year, which ended on July 7.
The East African country generated 5.65 billion dollars from gold exports during the reported period, with commercial and artisanal gold miners producing a combined 44 tonnes of gold, according to the ministry.
It added that the government aims to generate 6.7 billion dollars in mining export revenue during the 2026/2027 fiscal year.
Highlighting the mining sector’s rapid growth in recent years and its emergence as a major pillar of Ethiopia’s socio-economic development, the ministry said the government has now designated the sector as one of the country’s five main economic pillars.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently announced that the country generated a record 11 billion dollars in total export revenue during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, driven by strong performance across key export sectors, particularly gold and coffee. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
