Rundu, 4 September – Independent patriots for Change (IPC) chairperson for Divundu, Marando Freddy says the Divundu Village Council that was elected in 2016 took away people’s land and relocated them to an area with no electricity and water.
Freddy said the relocated people were promised compensation for their land but up to today, none have been paid.
He further said, the only thing the village council cared about were the rich and not the majority of the people.
“One person from whom land was taken decided to build a house on someone’s property, promising to pay for it when he got compensation but nothing has been fulfilled. We even wrote letters that they asked for but still no answer.
“The relocated people are suffering because they have no water and electricity while councilors enjoy luxuries at the community’s expense. Council should compensate our people,” said Freddy.
Freddy said that when a new Rukonga road was constructed in 2016, more than five homesteads were relocated and none have been paid compensation yet although the council had promised to compensate the affected people.
He added that another grievance of the people of Divundu is the dug-up graveyard where they have constructed the sewage line.
“They violated the resting place of our ancestors,” said Freddy, adding that many graves had been dug up and to no effort of returning them to rest.
Freddy demanded that the council re-buries those remains because is taboo.
“They asked us to write a letter which we did, but up to this day no response has been received. We demand that the council buries those remains with immediate effect. – ariesbernhold21@gmail.com
