Cuban community asks for removal of economic blockade

WINDHOEK, 27 OCT  – If the United States’ economic blockade on Cuba is lifted, the country will have the opportunity to use all its human resources potential for more development.
This was said by Deputy Head of Mission at the Cuban Embassy in Namibia, Aldo Fuentes during an interview with Nampa on Saturday, shortly after a peaceful demonstration was held by the Cuban community living in Namibia, who are asking that the blockade be removed
Namibians who studied in Cuba marched with them in solidarity.
The US blockade is a commercial, economic, and financial embargo imposed by the United States since March 1958.
Fuentes said if the blockade is abolished, it would allow Cuba to trade with any country of its choice as up to now, they have had to use difficult means to acquire technology and goods needed for development, he said.
He added that the 60 years of the blockade created a lot of highly educated people that have the tools to develop the country.
However, the blockade has been the main obstacle to development and a big violation of the Cuban people’s human rights and there has been a lack of technology and opportunities to trade with other countries, the deputy head of mission said.
The embassy organised the demonstration ahead of Cuba’s presentation of a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly for the 27th year next week, calling for an end to the United States’ economic embargo on the country.
“This year we hope the international community are in support of our resolution so that we can have another victory in this very important struggle for us,” Fuentes stated.
