Bela Bela, November 7 – Froliana Joseph, a key figure in the 2020 robbery at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s game farm, appeared in the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court alongside her co-accused, Imanuwela David, after their arrest by the Hawks over the weekend. The two face charges related to the theft, housebreaking with intent to steal, conspiracy to commit robbery, and conspiracy to commit housebreaking with intent to steal, with David also facing a money laundering charge.
During the brief court appearance, Joseph’s attorney, Mike Mokgobu, requested that her 1-year-old child, who is solely dependent on breastfeeding, be allowed to be brought to her three times a day. The court granted the order, demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of Joseph’s infant.
The case stems from the 2020 burglary at President Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm, where several hundred thousand US dollars, concealed within a couch at the Limpopo lodge, were stolen. The National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo confirmed that David was among the burglars involved in the heist.
Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo, explained that the suspects’ initial attempt led them to the wrong farm due to their unfamiliarity with the area. They successfully reached Phala Phala on their second attempt, resulting in the theft of $580.
The charges against Joseph pertain to her alleged involvement in planning the robbery, adding a layer of complexity to the case. The matter has garnered widespread attention as it coincides with mounting concerns about corruption and security breaches within the upper echelons of the South African government.
The outcome of this case is anticipated with great interest, as it may provide insight into the extent of alleged corruption and the potential involvement of senior government officials. As the legal proceedings continue, they promise to shed light on the intricacies of the 2020 robbery and its implications for South Africa’s political landscape.
