WINDHOEK, Aug. 28 -- A study on the status of child marriages in Namibia shows that child marriages are still occurring in traditional settings but are hidden, official said Wednesday. Speaking at the bi-annual psycho-social support forum, Deputy Minister of Gender Equality & Child Welfare Lucia Witbooi said child marriages had to be given necessary attention. "We are telling the world that child marriages is not a small matter any more and should be given necessary attention. Child marriages are robbing our children of their childhood, education as well as potentials," said Lucia. In Namibia, girls as young as 13 are still being forced to marry old man under traditional arrangements. Namibia is working on introducing more laws to clamp down on child marriages. Namibia's child care and protection act states that no child under the age of 21 can marry. The study is yet to be released. Xinhua
