PHNOM PENH, Aug. 22 — Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Saturday urged parents and caregivers to exercise caution following a recent spike in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, particularly among children under five.
The ministry did not provide specific case numbers.
According to its press release, HFMD is a viral infection primarily caused by Coxsackievirus or Enterovirus 71 (EV71). While it mostly affects infants and young children, adults can also contract the virus.
The disease typically causes fever, painful mouth ulcers, and blister-like red rashes on the palms, soles of the feet, and buttocks.
Consistent good hygiene practices remain the most effective way to prevent the spread of HFMD, the press release said.
