BUJUMBURA, Jan. 25 — The Burundian ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), on Sunday re-elected Reverien Ndikuriyo as party secretary-general, the party announced on its social media account.
“During an extraordinary congress of the CNDD-FDD party and under the leadership of the chairperson of the Council of Elders, Evariste Ndayishimiye, the party congress people have renewed their confidence in the party Secretary-General Reverien Ndikuriyo, and Cyriaque Nshimirimana as the party Deputy-Secretary General for a five-year term in office,” said the party on its X account.
The election took place behind closed doors in Gitega, Burundi’s political capital. Ndikuriyo becomes the first CNDD-FDD leader to serve two consecutive five-year terms, having led the party since 2021.
His second term will run until 2031. The CNDD-FDD party has been in power in Burundi since August 2005. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
