GABORONE, Dec. 16 — Botswana’s President Duma Boko on Tuesday launched the Traffic Signals Modernization and Centralized Traffic Control Center for the country’s capital city Gaborone and the surrounding areas to address urban congestion and improve road safety.
The centralized, smart system integrates traffic lights, surveillance cameras, speed enforcement and real-time monitoring into one coordinated control center, enabling proactive traffic management, quicker incident response and improved road safety across Greater Gaborone and surrounding settlements, according to Boko’s social media account.
“Through data-driven coordination, we are easing congestion, reducing accidents, shortening travel time and enhancing the daily experience of commuters.
This initiative strengthens public safety, improves productivity and supports a smarter, more efficient urban environment,” Boko said at the launching event.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Noah Salakae said the traffic management center is the hub for traffic control and monitoring in Greater Gaborone, and is expected to contribute to traffic flow improvement, reduction in accidents and crisis management for many years to come.
For his part, Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs Ketlhalefile Motshegwa said the system provides real-time data, intelligent traffic analysis, and enhanced planning capabilities, ensuring that decisions are informed, strategic and future-focused. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
