Windhoek, July 17 – The highly anticipated Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards for 2023 has revealed its distinguished panel of judges, comprised of Dr. Nelson Mlambo, Natasha Uys, and Namafu Amutse. In addition, Clara Mupopiwa and Erik Schnack have been commissioned as the artists responsible for creating the coveted awards.
The judging panel brings together a diverse group of acclaimed literary professionals and enthusiasts from Namibia. Their extensive experience and expertise will ensure a fair and comprehensive evaluation of works in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. The objective is to recognize and celebrate Namibian literary artists who have produced impactful and resonant pieces.
Each edition of the Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards revolves around a specific concept or theme. Clara Mupopiwa and Erik Schnack, the commissioned artists, play a crucial role in translating this theme into tangible form. They will craft unique trophies that will be presented to the winners in each category.
Dr. Mlambo, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Namibia (UNAM), possesses degrees in literature and communication from esteemed institutions. He specializes in African literature and has published numerous articles, books, and chapters in the field.
Natasha Uys is a seasoned Namibian writer and editor, boasting 17 years of experience in the media industry. Her passion for literature is evident in her role as a sub-editor for The Namibian newspaper. She holds a postgraduate diploma in media management from Rhodes University and was the recipient of the inaugural nonfiction award at the Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards in 2021.
Namafu Amutse, a multidisciplinary artist, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Education Honours degree in English and German at the University of Namibia. She has gained recognition for her photography series “Chrysalis,” which claimed the visual arts category at the Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards in 2021. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in various publications.
Clara Mupopiwa and Erik Schnack, the commissioned artists, bring their unique artistic perspectives to the creation of the awards’ trophies. Mupopiwa, an award-winning graphic designer and mentor, is renowned for her Afro-chic style. Schnack, a sculptor and mixed-media artist, focuses on exploring mechanical movement and technology in his thought-provoking works.
The Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards seek to honour the literary contributions of Namibian authors featured in Doek! Literary Magazine, the country’s sole literary publication.
