WINDHOEK, Aug. 14 — Date – The twenty-third edition of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, aptly themed “HeroesUnite,” recently held a vibrant spinning and stepping event in collaboration with the Cancer Association of Namibia at The Grove Mall in Windhoek. The Bank’s dedicated Marketing and Corporate Communication Services (MCCS) team, with unwavering support from the community, sold apples and juice, raising an impressive sum of approximately N$13,000.
The atmosphere at the event was electric, drawing in enthusiastic cyclists eager to support the cause. Among the participants was Jan van Blerk, who cycled passionately from 07:00 to 14:00, completing an inspiring 120 kilometres in a time of 6 hours, 59 minutes, and 24 seconds. The Cancer Association of Namibia’s employees also did their part by active fundraising, shaking cans, and offering hair spray to participants and spectators, adding to the funds. To keep the spirits high, clowns and superheroes delighted the children in attendance, creating an enjoyable family-friendly environment. The event was also broadcasted live by Radio Kosmos, extending its reach.
The concept of indoor cycling, known as spinning, involves classes designed for endurance, strength, intervals, high intensity (race days), and recovery. It employs specially designed stationary exercise bicycles with weighted flywheels, typically conducted in a classroom or outdoor setting. “Spinning is an excellent workout for improving cardiovascular health as it increases your heart rate and blood flow,” highlighted Audrey Mostert, Bank Windhoek’s Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sponsorships. She expressed gratitude to all the champions of hope, emphasizing the vital role each person plays in making a difference and becoming a superhero.
Support the Cause by Purchasing Apples
The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project encourages supporters to visit its e-Apple platform on the Bank’s official website. The platform offers donors the choice to purchase physical apples, apple juice, or virtual apples, with each physical apple priced at N$5, apple juice at N$8, and virtual apples starting at N$5 each.
Since its inception in 2000 with an initial donation of N$250,000, the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project has significantly contributed to the Cancer Association of Namibia, raising an impressive total of N$33.9 million. This initiative stands as one of Namibia’s most impactful corporate social endeavours, aiming to make a tangible difference in the lives of cancer patients. All funds raised by the Project will be donated to the Cancer Association in November 2023. These funds will greatly assist the Association in providing free cancer screenings to the Namibian public, emphasizing the project’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access.
