Kenya, Feb. 17 — At least 10 people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday morning after a commuter bus collided with a truck on a busy highway in western Kenya.
Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu said the bus, with a capacity of 65 people, was traveling from Bungoma to Nairobi when it collided with the truck on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway at 1:00 a.m. local time (2200 GMT-1). “The drivers of the two vehicles died on the spot while three others succumbed to injuries during treatment.”
“The accident occurred at a sharp bend corner. From our observations the bus might have been overtaking since it had joined the lane for oncoming traffic. Seven people died on the spot,” said Joseph Korir, a local government official who was at the site.
Over 70 people, including two students, were injured and rushed to hospital, he said, adding that they managed to retrieve all the seven bodies from the wrecked vehicles at around 4:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) when the police had cleared the scene.
The accident came days after 10 people were killed on Kericho-Nakuru highway on Thursday.
An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite efforts by the state and private sectors to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority.
