WINDHOEK, Mar. 28 – The Namibian Presidency circulated a statement today stating that President Hage G. Geingob had rescheduled the National Clean-up Campaign to 25 May 2018.
Last October during the inauguration of the City of Windhoek Head Geingob announced his intention to set aside a day on which all Namibians would engage in a nationwide clean-up campaign.
He outlined that the aim would be to make Namibia the cleanest country in Africa.
In the aftermath of the Hepatitis E infections outbreak, President Geingob paid a visit to informal settlements in Windhoek, on 29 December 2017, where he also expressed his concerns about cleanliness and general hygiene in the communities.
On 12 March 2018, the President shared these concerns on litter during a consultative meeting on the state of the Namibian economy with the leadership of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW).
At the same meeting, the President expressed his decision that a National Clean-up Campaign be held on 1 May 2018, to which the NUNW found agreeable.
“After careful consideration of external pressures bearing on the labour movement with regard to the choice of that date, the President has decided to reschedule the National Clean-up
Campaign to 25 May 2018.”
According to the statement, President Geingob said that the labour movement played a central role in Namibia’s liberation struggle, with the call for freedom, informed by the imperative to achieve a living wage and better living conditions for Namibian workers.
“The President does not wish to create the impression that he would want to detract attention from the singular significance of May Day in the calendar. It is with these in mind that the President directed that the National Clean Up Campaign be rescheduled to 25 May 2018.”
