ABUJA, Aug. 6 — The Nigerian government on Thursday issued an alert over a mild earth tremor that reportedly affected several buildings in parts of the capital, Abuja, earlier this week.
In a statement, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake said the tremor was first reported on Tuesday morning, adding that the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) had been directed to provide hourly updates on seismic developments around Abuja.
The tremor originated at a depth of one km and spread over a distance of four km within five seconds, Alake said. He added that the NGSA had classified the occurrence as a light seismic event, measuring between I and II on the Mercalli intensity scale and posing no immediate cause for alarm.
The minister said government agencies had activated proactive measures to safeguard lives and property while closely monitoring developments in the affected areas.(Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
