LUSAKA, May 15 — Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on Thursday urged the country’s electoral body to ensure the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming elections.
While acknowledging that the government has a duty to maintain a peaceful environment before, during, and after elections, Hichilema said the Electoral Commission of Zambia plays a key role in guaranteeing that the Aug. 13 elections are conducted peacefully.
“We expect peaceful, free, and fair elections, and the commission needs to play its part,” he said while swearing in officials of the electoral body.
Hichilema noted that elections provide citizens with a democratic opportunity to choose their leaders and urged all politicians to promote peace, love, and unity ahead of the polls. Zambia is scheduled to hold general elections on Aug. 13 to elect a president, members of parliament, and councilors. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
