CAPE TOWN, May 27 — Newly-elected President Cyril Ramaphosa will form a cabinet which possesses “requisite skills, experience, representativity and a commitment to the public services,” his office said on Sunday.
This is to ensure that the cabinet will take the work of the 6th administration forward, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko said.
Diko dismissed the speculations that the announcement of cabinet might be made on Monday.
“The Presidency wishes to advise that the announcement will be made later in the week,” Diko said.
The country’s Constitution stipulates that the president must assume office within five days of being elected by the National Assembly — and thereafter appoint a cabinet and assign its powers and functions, said Diko.
Ramaphosa was inaugurated on Saturday three days after he was elected president by Members of Parliament following the May 8 general elections, in which the African National Congress (ANC), led by Ramaphosa, won 57.51 percent of the votes, maintaining its dominance in Parliament.
There have been growing calls for Ramaphosa to form a smaller but effective cabinet to tackle a series of challenges confronting the country.
When taking over his predecessor Jacob Zuma who resigned over a series of corruption scandals in February last year, Ramaphosa inherited a bloated cabinet which was by far one of the biggest in the world, with 35 ministers and 37 deputy ministers. – XINHUA
