RUNDU, 29 OCT – A workshop aimed at creating awareness and knowledge on climate change started here on Monday.
The two-day event serves as a consultative stakeholder workshop on climate change awareness and climate finance for Namibia.
Kavango East Governor, Samuel Mbambo, who opened the workshop officially said the increase in temperature as indicated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will continue to exacerbate and put more pressure on water and food availability.
He said the situation is worrying for both humans and livestock in Namibia, a country already battling with recurrent and devastating droughts and floods for consecutive years, especially in the northern regions, where the majority of the people live.
“It will not be news to you that the impacts of climate change have already started jeopardising our economic development as a nation,” stressed the governor.
He said the negative impacts are most felt in the agriculture sector, particularly the rural households and small-scale farmers, who mainly depend on rain-fed subsistence farming.
The workshop is being attended by officials from traditional authorities, senior government officials, representatives from the forestry sector and conservancies.
Apart from creating awareness and knowledge on climate change, the workshop aims to increase climate policy crafting, environmental assessments, climate finance and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Furthermore, it also aims to identify transformative climate change adaptation and mitigation projects for submission to the Green Climate Fund from a broad group of stakeholders from all 14 regions countrywide.
