OMITARA, 15 OCT – The community of Omitara in the Omaheke Region on Monday received newly constructed ablution facilities, constructed as part of the Omaheke Regional Council’s capital projects.
A total of 244 ablution blocks, each comprising a flushing toilet and shower, were constructed and officially handed over to the community at a function officiated by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Peya Mushelenga.
The community also received five low-cost houses constructed mainly out of clay bricks.
One of the beneficiary of both an ablution block and a house, Max Hoxobeb, told Nampa he was grateful to finally have a decent roof over his head.
“I feel very good because these developments will go a long way in improving our lives here at Omitara,” he said.
He added that it had been difficult in the past to maintain proper hygiene due to a lack of sanitation services such as proper flushing toilets and potable water.
Another resident, Sara Fredericks, who received an ablution block, said as a pensioner, it was difficult to respond to the call of nature as the area near her place is largely flat with no shrubs or bushes nearby.
“I had to wait for darkness to dawn when nature calls before I can relieve myself. So, this is indeed a welcome gesture and I am grateful,” she said.
Omitara also saw the construction of a 500 metre access road linking the Otjivero Primary School and adjacent residential area to the main road.
The area has often been inaccessible when it rains due to flood water.
The Omaheke Regional Council spent N.dollars 250 000 on the construction of the houses, which were built by the residents themselves through its ‘Food for Work’ programme.
The total costs of the ablution blocks and the road, which were also funded by the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development through the regional council, amounts to N.dollars 8.9 million.
Omitara is located some 110km west of Gobabis in the Okorukambe Constituency.
