ONIIPA, 25 AUG – Namibian eye specialist, Dr Helena Ndume and a team of international doctors have conducted cataract surgery on 377 patients at Onandjokwe Hospital in the Oshikoto Region since last Friday.
Ndume told the media at Onandjokwe on Thursday the patients were mostly aged over 50.
She said the Onandjokwe Eye Camp targeted patients from Oshikoto but it also catered for those from nearby regions such as Oshana and Ohangwena.
One of the patients, John Namene from Oniiwe village in Oshikoto commended the team for restoring the eyesight of so many people and encouraged them to continue to do so in other regions.
Namene, 71, said he could not read or count his pension money for the past six months because he could not see.
“I am so excited that I can see again following surgery I underwent on Tuesday,” he said.
Oshikoto Governor Henock Kankoshi, while officially closing the eye camp on Thursday, congratulated the Ministry of Health and Social Services for organising it for 22 consecutive years.
“It serves as an important reminder to all of us of how crucial it is to take care of our eyes,” said Kankoshi.
He explained that the eye camp is aimed at the prevention, controlling and eradication of cataract blindness.
“The World Health Organisation estimates that at least one per cent of the country’s 2.5 million inhabitants are expected to be blind from various causes, mainly cataract, glaucoma and corneal disorders,” the governor said.
The international team of eye specialists is led by Dr Michael Colvard from the United States of America, who has been involved in the eye camp for many years.
Ndume and her team are heading to the Engela District Hospital in the Ohangwena Region next month.
