WINDHOEK, 31 JUL – The University of Namibia’s (UNAM) outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Lazarus Hangula said he is leaving the institution in capable hands after 14 years at its helm.
Hangula made these remarks during a farewell party the university held in his honour in the capital on Monday.
Delivering his farewell message, he said he was particularly impressed by his successor, Professor Kenneth Matengu.
“I am also happy that I am leaving UNAM in the hands of someone whose growth and development history has to some extent been associated with me,” said Hangula.
He advised Matengu to be accessible and to shun favouritism and divisive tendencies.
Hangula also reminded him that his biggest asset is his staff, who differ in character, qualification and dedication.
“Now that you are taking the mantle of leadership of the national university, you are also more than ever before expected to reflect the values of unity and inclusivity in your operations,” Hangula said.
He described his successor as someone who demands a lot from himself, while expecting the same from his colleagues.
Asked about the confidence and trust Hangula has in him, Matengu said: “I am very humbled to succeed him. I am not in this position as a winner but just as someone who is tasked to carry out this responsibility for the nation.”
He said he intends to build on what the former vice chancellor did and to do even better and more with the support of others.
Matengu, who starts serving in the position from Wednesday, was UNAM’s Pro-Vice Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Development.
The dinner was attended by over 100 guests, among them former President Hifikepunye Pohamba and current UNAM Chancellor, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba.
