KEETMANSHOOP, 20 JUL – The Roads Authority has established a steering committee for //Kharas that will be responsible for raising awareness on road safety at regional level.
The steering committee, consisting of 12 young people from the region, was established on Wednesday.
Road traffic and transport inspectorate regional head at the Roads Authority, Sebulon Muenjo told Nampa the objectives of the committee are to give the youth a voice on road safety, to contribute to a positive shift in attitude towards road safety and behaviour among young people and to encourage and support the emergence of a national cadre of young road safety leaders.
Muenjo said several stakeholders such as traditional authorities have been involved in their road safety awareness efforts since 2003.
“We however did not involve the youth and it is against that background that we have now decided to involve them,” he said.
He said statistics provided by the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund show that over 50 per cent of people who die in accidents on national roads are young people.
Group leader Viviane de Koe commended the Roads Authority for involving the youth.
She said young people get their licences as soon as they turn 18 and in their excitement at acquiring a licence, many times drive recklessly or drink and drive.
“But now that the RA has involved the youth, young people will have knowledge on road safety rather than just getting into their cars and speeding off,” she said.
The committee will have to report to Roads Authority officials in two weeks’ time on what measures they will take to address road safety.
Muenjo said they will then be required to compile a document describing what they, their parents, teachers, government leaders and the community at large can do to improve road safety.
The Roads Authority plans to establish a similar committee for the Hardap Region.
