RUNDU, 16 JUN – The Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol) is not a “second chance” institution and must be seen as a choice for someone who wants to study while pursuing other interests, its Director Heroldt Murangi has said.
He was speaking at the official inauguration of the newly constructed Namcol lecture halls at Rundu on Thursday.
Murangi said if someone cannot go through the conventional education system for various reasons, they can study through open and distance learning as this mode of learning is flexible and offers parallel opportunities of work and study while pursuing other interests.
He said it is important that people realise that there are a lot of learners who have passed through Namcol and have become leaders in society.
“I think we should change the perception that for you to be successful in life you should be confined to the four walls of a classroom,” the director stressed.
He thus called on community leaders to pay regular visits to the new facility and motivate the students, as well as share knowledge and information with them.
In as much as the facility is a state of the art facility, it will not be used optimally if there is a lack of support from the communities who are the principal beneficiaries.
The new halls were named after individuals who contributed to education in the region such as the late Governor of the then Kavango Region, Maurus Nekaro; the two former directors of education, Alfons Dikuwa and Sebastian Kantema; as well as former Otjozondjupa Education Director and Member of Parliament, Faustina Caley.
The lecture halls were constructed at a cost of N.dollars 6 million.
