EENHANA, 22 MAY – The three-year Promotion of Renewable Energy in Namibia (PREN) Project has selected Ondjabayonghalu and Omuuni as the two combined schools to be fitted with renewable energy technology in the Ohangwena Region.
PREN Project Coordinator, Rodney Seibeb said this at Eenhana whilst presenting the project overview to officials of the Ohangwena Regional Council and Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture on Monday.
Seibeb said the two schools will be provided with solar systems, which will provide energy for lights, computers and printing. The two systems are worth close to N.dollars 170 000 each and will be installed by Central Technical Supplies to the cost of N.dollars 80 000 this month. The systems’ solar panels and batteries have a lifespan of 25 and 10 years, respectively.
The PREN Project came about last year and its implementation runs until 2019, after a baseline study conducted indicated that most un-electrified rural schools are located in the northern regions of Namibia.
According to Seibeb, six combined schools are to be selected in the country for said electrification in collaboration with the relevant stakeholders under the PREN Project.
The next two schools are to be selected in Omusati or the Kunene Region, and the last two will be in the Zambezi Region.
“The PREN Project is aimed at meeting the government halfway and the main objective is to promote the use of renewable energy and resource and energy efficiency in Namibia,” Seibeb stated.
The project is funded by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
