REHOBOTH, 16 MAY – Approximately 250 people on Tuesday turned up for the ‘Road to Rehoboth’ clean-up campaign in Aranos, supported by teams from Rehoboth, Gochas, Mariental and the Namibian Police (NamPol) Force.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, spokesperson of the Hardap clean-up technical committee, Warrant Officer Otniël ||Gowaseb said he was impressed with the turnout of the community, including white residents that were part of the clean-up.
“Aranos once again put up a marker that despite race and colour, the community has the cleanliness of the town at heart and I must applaud the mayor and constituency councillor for their mobilisation work in involving all,” ||Gowaseb said.
He said Aranos already has a different clean-up plan in place, like the Torch Recycling Company which recycles bottles and plastics in the town and a scrapyard where all the metal laying around is taken to.
“The Torch Recycling Company and the scrapyard is already doing wonders in keeping Aranos clean and you don’t see plastic and bottles strewn around. Another thing is that children, through bringing the waste material to Torch, are rewarded with stationery and sometimes shoes,” ||Gowaseb noted.
He said other towns and villages in Hardap should emulate the good example set by Aranos and keep their environment clean.
“Hardap will be the cleanest region in Namibia if all can just copy what is being done here. I must also give credit to all residents and especially Councillor Lorraine Christ from Rehoboth Urban West Constituency with the Fire Brigade from Rehoboth to have been part of the campaign since day one,” he noted.
Mayor of Aranos, Elden Kuhanga on Wednesday said the people at the town took it upon themselves to keep the town clean and in a way, lure investors to the town.
“We as residents know and are aware that we need to clean our environment. Through keeping the environment and town clean, we will be able to attract investors. I thank everyone who were part of the campaign for a job well done,” he commended.
The Hardap clean-up campaign, which is part of the national campaign, already covered Maltahöhe, Gibeon, Kriess and Gochas.
Stampriet is next on 17 May, Hoachanas (18 May), Klein-Aub (19 May), Mariental (21 May), Kalkrand (23 May) and Rehoboth (25 May).
