WINDHOEK, 23 Apr – The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MoEAC) raised over N$ 22.2 million to promote quality education in Namibia.
The money was raised at the Friends of Education in Namibia Special Initiative (FENSI) stakeholders meeting held here on 13 April this year.
The FENSI stakeholders list provided to Nampa last week revealed that companies such as Letshego Bank Namibia, FNB Foundation, Kunene Catering Service, Pupkewitz Foundation, Toivo Nuugulu Architects and South Haven Holdings, among others, pledged their support in the form of finance or service rendering.
The list further showed that donations were made to cover for food security, leap reader sets, construction of classrooms and the renovation of schools and teachers’ homes.
FNB Foundation Corporate Social Investment Manager, Revonia Kahivere told Nampa that their donation of N$ 400 000 is to cover purchase costs of educational materials such as photocopy machines, printers, computers and other equipment to the most needy schools.
Pupkewitz Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Meryl Barry said the foundation donated N$ 1.3 million for the construction of five classrooms and one multi-purpose room in one of the regions.
“The inauguration of the classrooms is going to be implemented by us in collaboration with the regional councillors or governors of that specific region,” she said.
Other stakeholders offered their services by partnering up with the ministry in creating books that will be informative to the learners, providing expertise on infrastructure as well as educational and environmental issues.
FENSI was launched last year July by education minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, with the aim to garner, consolidate and streamline support towards the educational system.
This year, 32 individuals and companies embraced FENSI by offering their services and financial assistance.
