CAPE TOWN, Sept. 27 — Ten people were killed and 11 injured in a shooting early Sunday in a township in the Cape Town Metro, South Africa, local police said.
According to a statement issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape, police reports indicated that gunmen entered an entertainment venue in Lwandle, which also sells braaied meat, at around 1:46 a.m. local time (2346 GMT Saturday) and opened fire on patrons.
Lwandle is a township about 40 km east of central Cape Town. “Five individuals died on the scene while five others succumbed to injuries sustained after being transported to medical facilities,” police said.
“Eleven others are receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained.” Local police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder.
A multi-disciplinary team led by serious violent crime detectives has been established to investigate the shooting, according to the statement.
“Detectives are hard at work in search of the perpetrators of the shooting incident with no arrests effected yet,” the statement said. Police said the identities of the deceased would be released once their next of kin had been informed.
“SAPS management has increased deployments to the area while the search for the gunmen continues,” police said.
Police also appealed for information from witnesses or anyone who could assist with the investigation, saying all information would be treated confidentially. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
