WINDHOEK, FEB 8 – While spreading Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) awareness is very high in local communities, practicing what is preached in the message remains far from a reality in Namibia, according to a national update on HEV. Add to that, the constant vandalism and theft of provided sanitation facilities highlights the lack of community ownership by affected communities.
Ministry of Health and Social Services representative Emmy-Else Ndevaetela gave an update on the Hepatitis E outbreak that was declared in December 2017 in Namibia during a stakeholders’ consultative workshop yesterday. It was there where she said that there was a lack of knowledge on Hepatitis E prevention, transmission and management.
Moreover, she cited inappropriate hand washing practices as well as open defecation, as findings that could derail the fight against HEV.
She gave the example of Omusati where certain behaviours also posed a threat to progress in eradicating the virus.
“Lack of clean water (people drink water from the canal), stigma and discrimination and Inadequate capacity of community health workers. (People) do not wash hands after using a toilet, and Hepatitis E is perceived to be a Windhoek derived disease. There is (still) confusion on hand shaking practices and the transmission of Hepatitis E,” she explained.
Ndevaetela added that in Khomas, water supply had improved with up to 97% households utilising tap water.
However, she said the role of community leaders and Television in health education was low, amounting to 10 and 7 per cent respectively.
“There is vandalism in these areas which results in uncovered water containers which account up to 28%. However, the chlorine level at the tap stands within standard range of between 0.2 – 0.8.”
It was recommended that the prevention message be repackaged in order to re-sensitise the general public, beginning with the need to bring a public health communication expert into the fold.
“There is a need for massive scale up of hygiene and sanitation promotion campaigns with the use of diverse media to reach the community. (We also need) active community invovlement through community leaders to ensure ownership and reduce vandalism and theft of provided sanitation facilities.”
Other recommendations made included calling the City of Windhoek to boost chlorine levels, construction of latrines alongside with proper hand washing facilities as well as capacity development with regard to community health workers.
In addition, there is also a need to step-up counseling of Hepatitis E infected patients and families, all the while sustaining active outbreak response activities. – musa@namibiadailynews.info
