TSUMEB, 19 APR – A police officer at the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court confiscated the cameras of two journalists here on Thursday.
The journalists from the Namibia Press Agency and Informanté Newspaper were at the court to cover the murder case against Tsumeb Namibian Police Station Commander, Chief Inspector Bernhard Nghuulivali.
On entering the court, the journalists introduced themselves to a constable on duty there. He insisted that they could not have their cameras with them in court.
“Put them (cameras) on the floor in the back of the gallery, otherwise I will keep them for you,” said the officer, before grabbing the cameras.
He kept the cameras until the end of the court proceedings, and refused to provide his name when the journalists asked him to do so afterwards.
Nghuulivali, 45, is accused of shooting and killing a 15-year-old boy in Tsumeb earlier this year for unknown reasons.
The shooting took place between the Build it store and the Central Northern Electricity Distribution office.
Nghuulivali also faces a charge of defeating the course of justice for allegedly fleeing the scene after the incident.
The case was on Thursday postponed to 30 June this year for further police investigations, and the accused is out on bail of N.dollars 10 000.
Meanwhile, angry Tsumeb residents who were blocked from entering the court, protested after hearing of the postponement of the case.
They demanded that both the presiding magistrate and prosecutor be removed from administering the case, believing that they are protecting Nghuulivali.
